is this a true comparison? where are you finding BA flights for 4 for £159 or is this Ryanair or another airline?...I would expect 4 x one-way BA flights to be over £400 total

Hand baggage only fares on ba can be dirt cheap.

The £159 was the price below plus costs for one piece of luggage, at the airport its 19 euro. (I have flown this route many many times).

    I

I have 72,000 Avios and a one way flight to Madrid for me and 3 kids is 26,000 avios plus £70. Booked without miles it is £159 all in.

...I do remember looking a while back and the upgrades seem worthwhile, but the points are no where near as good as they appear.
I have over half a million avois points via BA - always struggle to use them - easiest way is to book premuim economy & upgrade ....

Is there a UK website I can use to sell these on?

An idea was given by a previous poster but correctly indicates that the return will be poor.
is there a way to transfer these to another scheme like AVIOS?
    No.
I have 20000 miles in the Virgin flying club scheme which I can't see myself ever using. They don't expire until 2019

As you have found out, 20000 miles is actually not much in the greater scheme of things and have little redemption value on their own. You could buy extra, apply for and use the VS credit card to obtain more points, or exchange Tesco Clubcard points for more miles. That said you will likely need at least 40k-45k for redemption on a UK or European flight. Even then you will have to pay taxes and charges.

As they don't expire until 2019 why not just keep the account active as things might change for you in the next three years. No rush to make a decision is there?

    No.

That's incorrect as pointed out by a few posters above. You can convert to Avois, but the exchange rate makes it absolutely not worth it.

You and me both. However, it would be completely crazy to do it.
