In practice, you only need the file containing the few seconds that are important. You do have to switch the engine off, otherwise it will keep recording, and if you have a small memory card, like 4GB, it could get deleted while you argue with the other driver

    That's a good point.

However all the cameras that get positive reviews by Techmoan allow you to press a button and the file currently being recorded is then protected against being written over.

Therefore if you are involved in an altercation, or indeed just see something of interest on your journey, a simple push of the button and it's saved.

Some cars have a permanently live cigarette lighter socket.

Mine stays on as it's live, got a transcend pro 200. Wish I had one in back might have caught whoever scraped my car when shopping other week.

Even better that some of them have a 'bump' sensor that automatically saves the video for 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after the incident.

Mine has variable sensitivity - on the highest setting even a pothole triggers it.

    Just bought one of these;
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262283233800?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT#ht_5514wt_986

£14.75 delivered + £6 for decent memory card, works perfectly, reg plates readable from at least 3 car lengths disance.

As wirth Iceweasel, I also have a transcend DP200 - brilliant dash cam and the quality is fantastic.
Just looking at this today. Do you know the difference between the original 200 and the 2016 v2 model?

I've been using the Transcend 200 for almost a year. Great picture quality - day and night - it's wired up to come on/off with ignition. I can't fault it. I did try a lot of the cheaper Chinese eBay stuff which I should of just thrown in the bin as they either fell apart, had a mind of there own or lasted literally a couple of weeks.

Tech moan will just blow most peoples brain's apart as there's too much to take in and most of the features on the top end stuff aren't really needed, unless you like throwing your wallet or purse around.

Insert a decent size card into a 200, set it up how you want it and just leave it till there's something worth viewing. Great cam for a good price.

I've got the 100, from what I can recall the upper models have more bells & whistles, but the len's are all very similar so I went for the most basic, as less to go wrong, also I would choose the suction mount mine's been up for abt 2yrs never fallen off yet.

    What make/model?

The brand is Logitech. I bought it two years ago in Taiwan.
There are shops that sell all kinds of mountings for all kinds of dash cams. Spoilt for choice out there.

Garmin seems to be popular, but it's expensive.

There are lots of cheap ones on eBay that look similar, but I hear there are a lot of cheap and nasty ones.

I wish car manufacturers would just have them built-in.
One in front, one in the back. They could double as parking cameras.

Even on the lowest setting ours (a cheap halfords one) protects quite a lot of files, if you dont keep deleting the card it soon fills up.

We recently had a bump, the footage was great and hopefully will save me my excess, as soon as i stopped i pulled the memory card, and put my phone memory card into the dashcam, just in case. I may invest in a smaller card to leave in the car as has been mentioned here.

I have another dashcam in the other car, a £30 amazon one, the charing lead failed after 3 months, so i replaced this, now several months later it keeps switching itself off and then back on again.

    How very patronising.

You are entitled to your own opinion but to make that assumption about other people is extremely condescending.
