Currys PC World Used TV When I Paid For New

I made a purchase of a TV yesterday at currys/PC World... I was sold a used TV!!!
At the time of purchasing, I was advised there was only 1 remaining in stock. The box had been opened to show a customer but the customer decided he would return the following day to make the purchase. Supposedly this was an hour before I arrived at the store.
The advisor stated as the seal/tape had been broken, he had to inform me as technically it was not a new, but assured me It had simply been opened, shown to the previous customer and then return to the storage part of the store.
I haggled 50% off an Ariel which was 24.99. Turns out I received 50% off the price 29.99! When I queried this in store the response "sorry it's the system and there's nothing that could be done".
When I got home, my wife points out how odd it is that batteries are in the remote. I then realise the screws used to attach the TV's legs are in the holes of these legs and secured in place with masking tape. No plastic wrapping/for the Tv itself.
The TV had previously been previously Assembled/setup, poorly repackaged and then sold onto me!
Does anyone know what my rights are in this situation? The store called me this morning offering a refund of £30 which I refused. I then received a call from the team manager involved in the sale of my TV yesterday. He felt perfectly fine about calling me a liar, almost shouting down the phone at me, I guess attempting to bully me into silence....
Please help.....

Does your receipt by any chance say anything about it being ex-display? Was there any actual discount given on the set itself?
Have you emailed them? If not, I would do so now so that there is a paper trail (in a manner of speaking). And in that email name the dates/times you have spoken to the store and briefly outline what was discussed each time.
It may help further down the road. If you contacted them the same day you took it home, imo that helps support that you were told it was only opened and not used because if you'd been told it was used, why would you have contacted them so soon after purchase to complain. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

Not seeing a problem here. You got exactly what they said you were getting.0

Usually when they show 1 on the stock count it means the display one - so its entirely likely you were given this one.
If I recall display models don't show up on the receipt as ex-display - they may have discounted your ariel for that reason though - does it say ex-display on your receipt anywhere? If not then you would be under the impression it was sold as new. The problem is the sales person could argue you agreed to buy the display, knowing it was a display one.0 -
i would just like to add this is why i always insist on brand new in unopened boxes,i will refuse anything that is not so and is the reason ive boycotted agroes until recently
sorry OP hope you get it sorted as i know how you feel0 -

I think the above highlighted statment by the advisor is open to different interpretation, as I would have assumed that if it was the last TV of that model in the store, that "box opened and shown to the previous customer" would have involved setting up the TV so that the quality of the picture, features etc could be shown to the customer and hence "technically not new" on the basis of that one viewing. I think from reading your post that you assumed the previous customer had just wanted to look at the cosmetic features of the TV. If it looks new and no scratches etc that would indicate that it was ex-display then I would think a £30 refund would be satsifactory.
If you suspect it was ex-display due to the condition of the TV then a 5-10% discount is often given, so you coudl argue for that or you could argue that you were not informed it was ex-display and ask for a refund (but this would be a bit of a hassle as you would have to return the TV and then source another one).0 -

The TV doesn't sound to have been just 'shown to the previous customer'. There is no reason they would put the stand on and dispose of the plastic wrapping were this the case. It sounds very much like it's been sold and returned.
Return it and ask for a refund.0
