Cornwall/Devon, where to go on holiday?

Hi experts,

I am looking to book our summer holiday for next year, yes 2008! Like to be prepared. We were thinking of Cornwall or Devon but have no idea where are the best places down there for families? I am after somewhere where its not far to go for attractions/activities but close-ish to the beach also. Family holiday maybe in a cottage?

Started looking at brochures and there is South Devon, East devon, North Devon etc , so am even more unsure now.

Any clues or pointers to the best places to go, didnt realise Devon and Cornwall were so BIG !

Thanks in advance.:T

  • I prefer South Devon, Dawlish is lovely. Exeter is really nice city. Paignton Zoo is great. Lots for the family to do if the weather isn't too good. Beaches are lovely and there are lots of resorts nearby. North Devon is more rugged in my opinion and lovely towns like Ilfracombe seem to be a bit unkempt nowadays. Cornwall is very nice but sometimes not so much to do in bad weather, beaches are lovely, good for surfing. All said, South Devon for me any time.

St Ives is lovely, but dont bother going down to Lands End - very very cheesy, overpriced tourist attraction, in need of dire need of updating.
  • My Mum lives in Cornwall so we get to go for free but great places are St. Ives and fab beaches especially Gwithian and Hayle Towens which is very close to St Ives and all amenities. If you wanted a chalet or house that has amenities then the John Fowler holiday site is near to all and there is a holiday site that is right on the beach at Perranporth (you can use Sun £9.50 holidays for this) All these are very central and rain or shine there is lots to do in Cornwall.
The Eden Project, Flambards theme park, are great on wet days and on the south coast there are some beautiful beaches and scenery.
I highly recommend Cornwall but save up cos accomodation in high season is very expensive.
Google all these this and the Cornwall tourist board.
    Enjoy

Have to agree; Just spent the last week in Brixham, lovely place and the weather was great.:T
You've got Torquay, Paignton, Teignmouth, Dawlish (Warren) all on your doorstep. Most of Cornwall is at least another hours drive, nearer two if you go down to Penzance and the summer traffic is worse than HORRENDOUS.

We had a day in Newquay (Via the Eden Project) but it was very dirty, and has not changed since I was last there 10 years ago.

  • I too think Hayle has a fantastic beach. We stayed at the haven park and had a great time visiting places around the end of Cornwall.

St Michaels Mount is worth a visit.
It's far better to be penny wise than pound foolish.

  • What is the Haven park like there? Is it clean and upto a good standard? Chalets or caravans?

North Devon wise I would look at Westward Ho!, Braddicks are open all the year round and have on site bar/entertainment. They have quite large chalets too. Otherwise Surf Bay at the quieter end of the village.

    North Cornwall

Penstow at Kilkhampton have holiday lodges

There are several places in Bude which do caravans and lodges. If you are looking for a cottage try farm and cottage holidays
