To get back on track, anyone have a thought on a setting I may have overlooked to block unwanted calls. Caller ID is enabled and following the manual I have set to block international and withheld numbers except it doesn't.

Have you checked it Call Guardian is enabled or not? You keep talking about the other settings but not the Call Guardian one which is what enables the settings you've been talking about and you've not answered about this question. Also is it definitely a BT 8500 handset?

The link in the first post is 6500, hence I said it is not a 8500 two posts earlier

As said you are looking at the wrong item
BT Call Guardian is found under Menu .Call Control .BT Call Guardian .

I don't recall seeing a menu option for call guardian, but I did set-up in the call control menu.

    It is not there http://www.shop.bt.com/content/uni2/documentation/8h3d/bt6500_user_guide.pdf
The earlier posters were talking about the 8500. Personally I would get one of those I have one and the phone never rings from scammers etc, they have to announce themselves.

Apologies for the misunderstanding over the phone model, I assume you've tested withholding your own number and phoning?

I don't think blocking international and withheld numbers will stop many cold callers as they mostly seem to use virtual national numbers now so they show up as calling from a UK number.

08 numbers and mobiles getting through?

I bought one of £25 ish white call blockers off ebay. Not had a single unwanted call for many months.

The BT call blocker phone i have only allows upto 10 numbers.

For the record, TPS is useless. Most of these companies use a system of wardialling, where they call every single digit in an operational area code hoping to get hits. When they do, they get routed to a representative and they then talk to you. Sometimes it's more direct, however they often still follow the same system.

If they have your name, it will be from a list of name and numbers which they have bought off a charity or company which you have agreed to give info to.
