BT exsiting customer offers

Hi,

Can anybody please explain to me how it is legal to exploit exsiting customers vs. new customers?

I currently have 4 months remaining on my account with bt and am paying £19.20 p/m for standard broadband. I can upgrade this on an 18 month contract to infinity 1 for £18 p/m. A saving of £1.20 p/m.

If I became a new customer it would cost £7.50 p/m for infinity 1 - a difference of +£9.50 p/m and a longer contract.

If I cancel today I pay £77.12, factor this into a new customer infinity 1 deal would give a net payment of £13.92 p/m - a saving of £5.28 p/m on my current deal.

This excludes any cashback deals.

This is ludicrous, it should not be cheaper to pay an exit fee and rejoin.

If you cancel the question is if you try to rejoin are you then a new customer or not .

If they are like Sky, you have to have been gone for at least 12 months to get "new customer" deals.

Thats the key is the OP assuming they would become a NEW customer instantly ??
Or do they have actual evidence from BT .
  • spoke to them today, just out of contract, 1st he said i could cancel and rejoin straight away (after notice period), then 5 mins later he said i'd have to leave it 30 days before i'd be classed as a new customer, i asked if my wife could sign up straight away as a new customer, he said yes
  • Used to work there.

Its the name on the account that needs changing. Cancel whatever you have existing with them, then sign up for a new contract in your spouse/partners name.

I'm in a similar predicament. A new customer will get the package I am looking to upgrade to for 27.99 a month, whilst I have been quoted £40.99 final offer (albeit with £49 infinity connection fee waived). Can I cancel our existing BT account (in my wife's name) and set up a new account in my name whilst retaining our existing phone number?

No contract: paying on a month to month basis.

As you havefound BT dont really do deals for existing customers. In fact the way they do business almost forces customers to leave after the initial lock in.

New customers get 12 month min terms and huge discounts. After that 12 months costs can almost double. If you are really lucky you may get offered about 20% but you will then be tied in for a further 18 months.

So your options after the first 12 months are:
Pay twice the cost you can get the service from elsewhere (but at least you can leave when you want).
    Or
Pay significantly more than you can get the same service from elsewhere and be stuck for 18 months.

Its a wonder why anyone stays with them. customer turnover must be massive.

If you do "leave" BT, what happens to the landline number? You need to switch to keep the number.

I find it too much hassle to switch, but you get a new socket for free usually, so if you wanted to relocate the master socket, you can time the switch with a refurbishment.
