paid my builder with credit card

I paid my builder with several credit cards (each for £100) so that I would get s75 protection, for the whole build (the whole build cost £150k, but I paid £100 on 5 credit cards to get £30k x 5 = £150k worth of protection. Hope that makes sense!

Anyway, things have not worked out with my builder and I am faced with claiming for the remaining build via s75, has anyone else been through a similar process? What were their experiences?

Also, would it be easier to simply ask for a refund or to get them to pay the remaining balance to get the work completed (the only downside to this is that I have to pay for an independent surveyor to value the work) :(

Section 75 only covers you where the item as a whole is between £100 and £30000, so I wouldn't be surprised if you're not covered at all.

Source: "Pay for something costing between £100 and £30,000 on credit and the provider's equally liable if something goes wrong." http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases

In any event, why did you pay the whole balance before you were happy with the completed work?

You won't be covered for the whole build on any of the cards as the total exceeds £30k.

I successfully used S75 for building work (in fact, we're just in the final stage of having our bathrooms re-done). However, I think the others are right and that you've misunderstood the S75 rules... I wouldn't expect you to be covered as the total cost of the work is over £30,000. I'm really sorry and feel your pain.

You don't give any details about what's gone wrong but I'd strongly suggest you sort things out with your builder. Also, I assume you have made staged payments so can you just use what is left to get the work completed? If you post more information, I'm sure people can come p with some suggestions.

You are kind of missing the point, thanks for your contribution though

Sorry but its you that misunderstands how s75 works
  • Hi - could you re-read your question and clarify? Or give more details? It's not clear how much if the build cost you put on your cards, why things have gone wrong or what position your builder has taken.

Sometimes when your very close to a situation you leave out details which seem obvious but leave others scratching their heads!!

    Thanks

You have no claim at all.
The maximum for s75 is £30k never mind how many cards you used - so if you used 5 cards in order to get £30k cover each it won't work.

Maybe you could rephrase your question and add more detail?

    I agree.

OP you really need to read the rules the goods and services were for over£30K:

Here is one for the experts re s75

I pay a builder £100 deposit on a CC for an extension he does for me. A year later fault are found on the build amounting to £30k. Can I use s75 to cover the faults, should he go bust?

If so, and if the build costs £150k in total, could I in theory use 5 CCs, paying £500 in total, to get full protection from s75 for the entire cost of the extension?

S75 has a £30,000 limit, multiple cards make no difference, so your £150,000 original cost means no S75 claim/protecion.

I don't think you're going to get a different answer no matter how many times you ask the question.
