Cheapest PAYG with long expiry

I have an LG KF300 (now discontinued) on Orange that was given to me. If it's not unlocked, presumably, I can get it unlocked quite cheaply.

I want to use it for my 9 year old son, so that he can contact me occasionally. He will probably use it for short phone calls, maybe 10 calls a week. The calls will be sporadic. It's just so that if he's out playing with his friends, he can get hold of me.

What's the cheapest way to do this. BT will offer me a 12 month contract for £5 a month. Is there anyway I can do this cheaper on a PAYG/SIM only deal.

All advice appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I do not know answer, only thing I would point out, as you may already know, do not go contract with a phone in the hands of a child, a quick peruse of this forum will find many a distressed parent with a huge bill

PS, try ADSA or Tesco at a guess, as the phone will be used occaosinaly the normal expiry of 3 or six months should not be a problem

Talkmobile happy hour PAYG; 10p for up to one hour, handy for a few but long phone calls.

    I use Three 321 PAYG:
    3p a minute
    2p a text
    1p a MB

    No expiry on the credit.
Also when you top up £5 or more you get 100MB free.

For short calls and this phone (no 3g) Delight Mobile with 3p/min will be the cheapest. Credit doesn't expire as long as you make a call every 180 days.

If the calls are going to be short, then a Pay As You Go SIM without any monthly payment is likely to be cheaper, i.e. a deal that just lets you pay for any calls you make.

I expect all major networks have such a deal if you look for it. I have it with Vodafone.

I wouldn't be so sure about the phone being cheap or easy to unlock. So grumbler's suggestion of Delight mobile might be the best option to try (if an Orange locked phone will work on Delight/EE?).

As above don't even think of giving a child a contract phone!!! Would you give them a credit card with the PIN written on it?

When a contract quotes £x a month that's only for a certain amount of calls/text/data and only certain types of calls. Someone steals the phone and they could run up thousands - there are professional theives who do this, calling premium rate numbers they get a cut of. There are frequent horror stories here and elsewhere where people have been landed with bills for thousands.

Also it's easy for a child to "sign up" to a premium text service which could cost a lot.

Even so called "capped" contracts often have exclusions. Get a PAYG SIM - all the networks do PAYG with no expiry of the credit - you just usually need to make at least one call every 6 months or so to keep the SIM alive.

The credit does expire if you don't make a call every 6 months.

*pedant mode* - I think the actual wording is that you must undergo a 'chargeable event' every 6 months.
Maybe that would be a text, call or data?
Maybe an incoming call would suffice?
We have a Three sim that we've had for several years without credit. It is just used for incoming calls. We haven't been cut off yet - Grumbler says we are very lucky.
