Interestingly, I had both Lloyds and Halifax freeze a payment destined for the same account (a new one I'd recently opened) last month. Halifax rang me within about 8 hours and we went through the usual credit report guessing games, the block was lifted and I was able to complete the payment.

For Lloyds, the payment was frozen for 3 days and the block was mysteriously lifted without any contact and I was able to cancel the payment (I'd already sent it by routing it via another account). Two days later I received a letter telling my online access had been suspended and to contact them (erm, no it hasn't and I've had no problems sending a further payment to the same account this month).

Many thanks to everyone who replied - just to let you know what happened.....

I went into branch with my passport; the smiley very apologetic young man who greeted me at branch had the right temperament..so I didn't have the heart to rip into him. It took him 15 minutes to get through to Fraud Operations and he verified to them that I was who I said I was. Declared his staff number and following the phonecall he assured me that all was well. I still didn't get a reason as to why my transactions were halted by the Fraud team.

Two days later, I logged online and discovered that my access was still blocked despite being told that all was well! Had to call the Fraud Operations again, and they told me to go into branch again! And that was when I absolutely lost it. Told them that I needed access NOW to pay bills! AND they'd better NOT make me go into branch for a second time! I was read a script, answered more questions, and access was then given back to me. I was asked three times whether I still wanted to make a £3K transfer. I'm still perplexed as to why they were behaving like this despite the proof that I had provided to them. And £3K is not a lot of money in the overall scheme of things!

To cut a long story short, I've now switched to Santander - should be done by Friday - fingers crossed.

I give my money to a bank to hold - I expect to be able to do things with my money freely. In this case, I was halted a few times and I received a lot of grief with no reason provided, or explanation, nor an apology. That's not what I expect from a banking service.

Nice one. You did exactly the right thing. Sooner or later these chumps at the banks will get the message that this MLP has got beyond a joke. And you make a good point that it's YOUR money.

There seems to be a lot of it about. I bought an item on line for £700 - the item wasn't in stock to I bought a similar item from another store 24 hours later - card was blocked and Barclays sent me security texts I had to respond to - then said - ok, you can carry on now...frustrating but reassuring too.
I then wanted to move about £10K to my brothers account so went in to the branch (as I feared the same blocks others have posted above) and was made to wait 25 minutes while the bank teller disappeared into another office "to check me out" I then got an alert from a CRA I subscribe to saying a credit check had been carried out by my bank! All because I wanted to move some of MY money to another account.
I know it s a tough call to balance strong security with customer care but just lately the banks seems a bit over zealous - I just figure they know something we don't and are keeping a very tight reign on things...

They done a credit check? For a transfer ? Thats a abuse of your personal data, you explicitly have to authorise one being done.

I would be sending a official complaint in writing and copy to https://www.ico.org.uk

    What bank was this?

  • It would have been an AML check not a credit check - and the T&C's allow them to check at any time they want.
The T&C's of all banks that I know also allow the bank to refuse to make a payment or act on an instruction from an account holder for a whole variety of reasons

So if I was you I'd not take @diamonds "advice".

Yes and no. Yes, it is an abuse of your personal data, but no you don't have to explicitly authorise a data rape on credit information held about you by the CRAs. Very many organisations can access data, even credit-related data, about you held by the CRAs without your consent, and almost as many can write data about you to the CRAs' files, again without your consent. Most financial organisations will have you believe that your consent matters, but actually it doesn't.
