I fell for this trap when I bought my HK$ from Travelex using my CAHOOT debit card.

    I got charged £1.51. (1.5%)

I've just rung Nationwide and Samantha in the Swansea call centre confirms they DO NOT charge when using the travelex service.

So, IF you need cash use the Nationwide debit card on the travelex site.

on hsbc / first direct if you use an atm in france, with a debit card, you pay an extra 1.5%, with a min charge of £1.75
on their credit card they charge 2.7or 2.5 % cant remember which... as I'm traveling from a ferry port at odd hours cant use travelex either,...aargh

As someone who doesn't have a nationwide acc either thought I would put up infor about Halifax as I rang them to get their charges.

    Halifax one card:
    2.75% per transaction

    Halifax current accounr A
£1.50 per transaction on cash out
    2.75% per transaction swipped

I personally think the are really ripping us off, think its off to travelex for all my cash for the holiday!

  • Instead of a cash machine and the associated fees Plus uncertantity of the rate that you will get how about this...

Buy the Euros from the high street over "there".

I have just returned from Ireland and the rate to "buy back" sterling was around 0.63.

This makes the rate £1 = 1.58 euro.

The same post, the same reply: ('Spending money question.' thread)

As far as I understand, 'buy back' rate applies only to the currency that you bought from the same agency a short time ago (usually within 1 month). Of corse, if they sold you ££s for about 1.58 they can afford to buy 'leftowers' back at the same rate.

EDIT: or if you buy ££s today the agency guaranees to 'buy back' the same amount or less within one month at the same rate.

Travelex is best, you are paying out more but also receiving more euros. Simply put they are giving you 1.4467 euros for every pound whereas Lloyds are only giving you 1.4240 euros / pound.

Buying forex higher rate is best, selling forex lower rate is best.
