Choosing new broadband

VM cable is not truly fibre optic, its oversold and they are ramping up prices year on year, often you will have high latency and the line will crawl in teh evening if you are in a high utlization area, ie your 152mbps line will crawl to 5mbps in the evenings.

BT infinity (fttc) has improved greatly and teh advantage is that their 80/20 product is quite good, the upload is very close to the 20mbps speed.

ADSL is c***p.

Best option is https://hyperoptic.com/, true fibre like speeds every day but only available in certain developments.

I think there should be a law against compulsory line rental as i notice virgin charge £18 per month with NO option not to rent a line - at least with FTTC you can rent your line from any company (unless it's a LLU service)

I canceled VM broadband only (I dont have a phone line) and they called back after 2 days. Down to £18 odd.

On FTTC i normally get the expected reduction from 80 to about 74:


although the 13ms ping seems quite high compared with ping via the console when i normally get 11ms for a uk based host:

No! Unfortunately its the 200mb service. I have sometimes got 190-204 mb but typically it looks like this-

Virgin rang me back and offered me broadband for £19.65 or £22.99 with phone,as Ive been a loyal customer so I'm happy with that
After reading replies it seems the strongest broadband. Thanks

No they do stand alone broadband. Said I could have it for £19.65 a month.

Hardly "strong" if someone has just said they only get just over half the advertised speed.

Works fine for us. That's what I go by. Judging from replies and other people's experiences I'd be worse off going to Talk talk or BT.

Cant speak for Talk Talk but I have had no problems with BT Broadband and phone. With BT you just need to remember that BT Sports is contract dependent, and £5 a month for the full sports channels. If you leave mid-term you have to pay up the contract.

I guess customers views of ISP's are very variable depending on subjective experiences. You don't hear much from satisfied customers.

I am checking out my own options as my contract with BT is up soon. I have had a look at plusnet which are cheaper but have a longer contract period. If BT offer me a competitive deal I will stay with them.

I was considering BT. My friend moved from Talk Talk to BT and much better for her. I also like the free sport.
I didn't know Virgin would ring back and offer me a deal that is cheaper than most for broadband we do find reliable,so would be silly to move. Thanks for the replies.
