5 Driving Lessons for £25

  • No, the actual fee is subsidised by the company in this case. But like I said earlier, all instructors are self-employed and when the one-man Arthur Bloggs-Smythe School of Motoring does it (and they do, because they want to snag pupils) they only get the £5.

Independent instructors are by the far in the majority out there.

In response to aloiseb, you are absolutely right in what you say. But money does have an effect in some cases because instructing people to drive costs money by way of fuel, and low lesson costs means instructors will be trying to keep costs down to maximise their earnings. Honestly, they do. Not all of them, but the risk is there.

As someone said earlier, Surepass has taken on huge numbers of new instructors and it can no longer be sure of guaranteeing the 100 new pupils a year it has in its contract in some areas. This promotion is designed to balance that.

The problem is it brings the industry down because not everyone can afford to charge lower prices in order to compete and in the long run it is the pupils who lose out.
  • I'm not sure why all of you are paying so much for driving lessons...

I'm doing mine with the AA (simply because my nan gave me the money and she's rather I did it with a big name!) and they're only like £20 per hour.
    SS Christmas Challenge: £109.90
  • The AA charges depend on the area, Tommy.

Around here it is £24.50 per hour with a block booking discount making it £22.50 per hour. Yours sounds like it was a standard rate of £22 and a block discount of £20.

Some instructors will charge the discounted rate if they know pupils are going to learn with them even if it is pay-as-you-go. Others jump at the chance to charge a few quid extra.
  • My son has just returned from his first hour lesson on this offer.
The instructor was on time and I quizzed him before I let them go. He qualified in 1989 and gave all the right answers. It was actually 1hr 20 minutes before they returned, and he said I was welcome to sit in on the lessons to see the progress and what I was paying for (son looked horified so I turned this one down). He had about 6 lessons last year before A levels got in the way, so has a little experience. This was all taken into account. Brand new corsa, and he was happy with how things went.
He has a 2 hour booked for Friday. I am very happy with this offer so thanks op, and I hope others will be successful with this too.

  • Why is there an assumption that the £5 is all that goes to the driver? If that's right, then fine, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the instructor being compensated more substantially by Surepass, with the promotion being a loss-leader to hoik in new customers.

The instructor will only recieve the £5 per lesson.

This is a loss leader - take it while you can, it's not a bad deal at all, but as soon as you're paying full price again ask if your instructor is the best you can find at the price.

Look for a pink badge (trainee) in the window or a green one (fully qualified, passed all exams etc).

Do you enjoy the lessons, are you learning new stuff that makes sense. Can you see that you are dealing comfortably and independently with more complex situations every lesson?

If not, get a better instructor.

    5 lessons for £25 then 50 lessons at £19 = £975

    35 lessons at £23 = £805

    Simple math guys.

  • The instructor doesn't get £5 per hour. They send the vouchers to surepass who will then exchange it for £17.50. Apparently the !!!!-up on their site cost surepass in excess of £14,000!
  • Would be interesting to hear how others got on with this. A lot of harking about poor value but only only one review from someone who actually took the offer and was pleased as punch.

Seems the harbingers of doom can't match the reality?! :rotfl:

  • The instructor will only recieve the £5 per lesson.

I don't think that's true (but could be wrong if you have info I don't). Information given to me indicates that Surepass is covering the deal and, like the AA or other big schools, is effectively subsidising the offer.

Quite a few Surepass cars have appeared in my area and this comes from a mate of mine who has a franchise with them. I reckon he should know.

I'm sure that many people will be happy with what they get, and others won't. You mustn't forget - and most pupils or parents haven't got a clue how this works - that instructors are self-employed and no matter what the company offers the final result comes down to an individual who is not employed by that company.

Low lesson costs tends to mean cutting back somewhere.

Lumpy_bum. To be fair, your problem could have occurred with any online/phone booking and the Surepass offer isn't connected directly with it.

If you have bank confirmation the money has been taken then keep on at Surepass and they will sort it. Just stay logical and calm and make sure things move forwards instead of sideways (just like with any over the phone complaint).
