Fan constantly kicking in on MK5 Golf R32

Coolant sensor was replaced which seemed to sort it for a little while but the problem came back.

Basically you can jump in the car, take it for a spin, pull up, turn car off & the fan will constantly kick in & then off & then on & then off (etc) for a good while.
Come to it a few hours later, ignition on & the fan will still spin. Note: Just ignition on, not actually take it anywhere or even start it.

Any ideas on cause/fix?

I've since cleared the codes using Vagcom but i suspect that some/all will return.

You might have edited out the irrelevant stuff from that list - save us all getting RSI from repeated scrolling :)

    I haven't edited out anything.

Simply because i don't know what is relevant & what isn't really.

The basics is in the text at the start - fan kicking in constantly, even with ignition on.

Does that not whittle it down a bit? I'm no mechanic, which is why i'm asking. Alternatively, do you know of a decent Golf forum?

I think you might get a more informed answer from one of the VW Owners forums.

Just Google "VW Owners Forum" or "Golf Owners Forum"

Could be an issue with the climatronic having an open circuit as the cooling fan will come on if the AC is on. Could be throwing the ecu out and making the fan come on. But best speaking to an expert either on golf forum or independant specialist in your area.

There seems to be a forum for each mk of golf so best to Google vw golf mk5 forum and pick one see how you get on.

There seems to be far too many errors being logged which makes it doubtful that there are failures in all of those components. Either there is an electrical issues i.e. grounding or something has messed up big time on the ECU.

Have you changed anything using VCDS (apart from erasing fault codes - eg. long coding?). It's just a few of the modules are reporting incorrect coding.

How long ago did you change the coolant sensor and was it a genuine/good quality sensor? It's not impossible for a sensor to fail again within a short period of time so don't rule it out.

It will be much easier to diagnose if you scan your car again after doing some miles to see which error codes return.

Faults in the Climatronic could bring on the fan. But there is a separate fault for the coolant sensor logged in the ECU. It is very likely that the sensor has failed especially if it was not a genuine VW sensor (and wiring issues/earthing have been ruled out).
  • It's not actually my car to be honest. I'm just borrowing it while mine has no brakes & since i have vagcom i offered to plug it in for the person i'm borrowing it from.

I haven't done any programming at all.

The sensor was replaced really recently, but as to whether it was a VW one or not, i don't know.

I do remember him saying something about it not having Air con. Either not having it or it wasn't working.

I'll take a look at a Golf forum then, thanks. I did try one but it was kind of dry on the reply front.
  • Done a bit of googling & hell fire these Golf forums are a bit sparse on the replies front :(

Does seem an odd combination of faults. I'd start by going round and checking all the connectors are seated correctly - especially the one to the main ECU. Then check for any earth faults and that the battery connectors are on nice and tight.

Basically you can jump in the car, take it for a spin, pull up, turn car off & the fan will constantly kick in & then off & then on & then off (etc) for a good while.

Is the air con switched on?
