I've used Motorola Migrate to move stuff from my last Motorola to this one. I also used it to move stuff to my first Motorola from my non Motorola phone.

I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and efficient it was.
Unfortunately, once your phone is on Marshmallow, Migrate is no longer available.

In that case, as well as backing up the .vcf to the SD card, also save it to cloud storage like dropbox or google drive, then if there are any issues with a factory reset wiping the SD card, you can restore it from the cloud.
