I am of the view that charities should have NO paid employees/board members/chuggers etc, and I only give to those that have this in place.

    Do any such charities exist?

    K.I.S.S

"Sir Can i take a minute to talk to you about save the children"

    respond with

"<insert your own expletive> the children"

"Hello sir, ever struggled with the damage you cause to the rainforest"

    respond with

    "nope"

There is no rules on apathy, especially when its strangers asking for money.

My personal favourite is when they try and guilt you into it, the face they pull when i say "money doesn't buy you happiness" is amazing.

Go into a small town every day and they are there more or less every day. They avoid me now. :(

All charities will have trustees. But there are plenty of little charities around the country with no paid employees, not even the trustees.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Incorrect bank details everytime. Luckily I can remember both my account no and sort code off by heart - shame I closed the account 4 years ago

I've carried out some work in the buildings that house 2 of the big names, one of which has been advertising on the Disney channel today. The Disney advertiser has swanky offices in London, with Walnut boardroom tables, leather chairs and so on.

The other has high end coffee machines, at least 2 per floor, dispensing better coffee than costa, all free. The machines alone cost 5k each to buy, there's at least 6.

They also employ someone to come in and do the cups and dishes for them, so the lazy sh#ts don't even have to clean up. Not exactly efficient use of funds.

Also worth asking the chuggers the ratio of donation to cause, they usually don't have a clue.

Hours of entertainment if I'm so inclined

I have no idea about the rest of your post, but this is clearly incorrect.

If you pay staff (say) £12 per hour, then clearly it makes financial sense for them to spend more time doing the skilled job they are employed for, and someone on (say) £6 an hour to do the unskilled work.

If the rest of your facts are so accurate, why don't you name the charities involved?

The first time I was approached by a chugger I made the mistake and let her talk to me. She was from ''Terre des Femmes''., a swiss NPO. She told me, she just wanted to talk for a few minutes and asked me what I was working as. At that time I was still a student, so she knew I didn't earn any money. But she kept on talking about the victims of female circumcision, how bad it was and if I didn't think it was bad. I began to feel extremely uncomfortable, as if i was trapped. She was very tenacious. When she finally started talking about the money, I said that I'd like to think about it at home. But she didn't want to leave and said that I should sign up right now. So I signed up, but I didn't know my bank identification code and I didn't have my bank card with me. I told her so and she even took my purse to see if I wasn't lying. Then she even called the bank, so I could ask for my code but gladly they were already closed. I had to promise her that I would e-mail my code to her later. As I am very timid the whole situation made me feel pretty bad. When I got home my parents told me to write an e-mail to cancel it.
Now I feel like, they just want to exploit timid people. I don't understand why they even ask people who don't earn money yet.

I disagree, if each person on say £12/hour was to wash their own cup at the end of the day, which would take 5 mins max, there would be no need to employ someone on say £6/hour and more money would stay in the charity. Heaven forbid they should wash their cups etc for they are skilled, much better to have some lowly skivvy to clean up their mess.

Surely if they are as convinced about their charitable ways, shock horror, they could use 5 minutes of their own time before leaving to wash their own cups instead of leaving the place looking like the set of the young ones

As for naming the charities, although a cop out, we still work for the landlords of these buildings, so not gonna happen. Client confidentiality etc

20 people at £12 an hour spending 5 minutes each = £20 of cost.
1 person at £6 an hour spending 100 minutes = £10 of cost. Plus they'll presumably also be doing other cleaning jobs.
  • you've missed the point, if everyone took five minutes at the end of their lunch to wash their stuff, which would be part of their lunchtime, therefore not intruding into their paid fundraising time the cost would be zero.

Likewise at the end of the day for coffee cups

That action was well out of order, she had absolutely no right to take your purse or anything of yours. I would have reported her to the charity she was representing.
