Do I have to use Sky's router?

Hi All,

I've made the switch from BT to sky today, plugged my new Sky router in & when I try to access a web page I get the following page:

Can't see anything in any of the correspondence on how to deal with this, but plugging my old BT router back in everything works fine, so can I continue to use the BT router?

Thanks in advance.

That seems to indicate that you are still connected to BT and not Sky so the changeover hasn't yet happened

  • Ok thanks, shall I keep using the BT router until it stops? Then plug the sky router in?

    That's the best bet

  • I agree. If your BT router is still working normally then it sounds like Sky are not yet providing the service and not only that but the work hasn't yet started to switch you over.

Normally the first sign that things are happening with the switchover is that you lose connectivity on your BT router then a few hours later when the work has been completed at the exchange the Sky router should work.
  • Thanks both, first time I've ever changed broadband so praying it goes smoothly.

    Will update as thing progress.

Every time that I have switched ISP's, it has only taken about 10 minutes from when the original service stopped for the new service to be connected and working, never hours!

Things can go wrong and I've had a swap take hours with a phone call necessary to get it sorted out.

The physical wire switch from a BT based service to an LLU provider such as Sky will be done at your local exchange and shouldn't take long at all. Where mine went wrong was that the new ISP hadn't set up my account with them so my routers login was failing and I had to phone them to get it working. My very first ADSL was the same thing and took a week to sort out due to my working hours and the ISP restricted support hours. I was far from impressed.
  • Update:

My BT hub dropped out at 13.25, I waited a few minutes to see if it would come back on but it didn't.

13.30 plugged Sky router in and within 2 minutes was back up & running, only had one drop out so far & speed has been stable & slightly faster than BT.

Just downloaded the Sky Wifi App, registered all my devices no problems either.

Hassle free switch, wish I'd moved from BT years ago.

BT wanted £254 just for unlimited basic broadband & line rental. I had the deal off here a few weeks ago with Sky for £116.

    Overall very happy :)

To answer your original question, you do not have to use the Sky supplied router, but in order to do so you will have to use some special software to extract the user name and password from the Sky router to enter into the non-Sky router.

Only if he has fibre, ADSL can be done with the below settings

    Encapsulation: PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
    login/username: install@o2broadband.co.uk
    Idle Timeout: 0
Internet IP Address: Get Dynamically from ISP
Domain Name Server (DNS) Address: Get Automatically From ISP
    NAT: Enable
    Multiplexing Method: VC-BASED
    VPI: 0
    VCI: 38
