Thanks mate, what could cause it to absorb too much water? The car has been back to the garage and they say they can find no fault (as you would expect them to do). Funny old thing, my brakes feel a bit "tighter" from the pedal since they've been in so they've definitely made some adjustments somewhere.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic which means it actively absorbs water whenever it is available. This generally happens over time, my minor moan at the main dealer when I took my car in for its second, and so first major, service was that I got a call saying they advised cgphanging the brake fluid. This was supposedly because of a test showing it had absorbed too much water but changing it every couple of years seems to be the norm.

Interesting, it had it's 2nd service about 2000 miles ago. Wonder if they've been cutting corners?

    According to this

Auto Hold prevents your vehicle from rolling backwards not forwards

Termed slightly differently in the owners manual. http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/manuals/deniol2172ZQrozeZrTjvNCuI

I suspect it's termed that way on the technology page to make it more appealing for buyers who struggle with hill starts maybe? Previous models had a function called Hill Hold, which I had on my Seat, this was a 3s brake for hill starts.

Brake fluid is usually changed at 3 years on the mk7, it's about £60-80.

Brakes aren't 'adjustable'. So I doubt it.

Also moisture in the brake fluid wouldn't create intermittent problems, would be something you feel a lot of the time
