Most people end up with tiny little cars for teenagers like Mii, Citigo or Up. I wanted a proper 5 door 5 seat hatchback. I got a Fiesta with all the latest electronics which kids like. I pay £625 to LV with my 18 year old son as named and main driver. The excess is maxed to £800 which I am OK with as I have savings. The catch - it has the old 1.25 60PS engine which is supposed to be very reliable but not very fast. The new cars don't have any badges on them and kids seem more interested in the electronics than which engine it has. You have to compromise somewhere to get a good deal on insurance.

Consider a vehicle that can be insured on a Classic Car Policy as they can be very cheap when compared to the usual suspects like a Corsa or Clio.

Not a hope of getting a classic policy that covers an 18yo as main driver. Most classic policies require a daily-use vehicle and minimum 25yo main driver. Also, classic policies don't give any building-up of no claims.

Though if I was going that route I would look at Series Land Rovers or Defenders aswell.

Have you seen the rates of thefts?

Which Classic Car Policies are those then? You can drive a 190E in Classic Car Insurance.

Since when can a car insurance company dictate how many cars you can own? And refuse to give you NCB? We aren't talking about £1000000 Bugattis here, we are talking about cars that are now classed as Classic cars for Insurance purposes. And I can assure you I earned NCB on my A40. And it was my only car with no requirement to have second car and I was 19 at the time.

And any car can be stolen, if you take simple precautions you can mitigate the risk.

With the best will in the world I think it will be a while before a Freelander is considered a Classic car.

Right. OK. You don't actually have anything on a classic policy, do you?

Not at the moment, but I have in the past.

And what difference does having an active policy make?

If any policy had such stupid stipulations then I would simply shop elsewhere.

Plenty of Insurance providers in the specialist magazines. And not all insurance policies are the same.

How exactly can an insurance company make you have more than one car just because you chose to buy a classic car?

And you will continue to do so until you run out of insurers selling classic policies.

Simple. They refuse to quote for a classic policy if you tell them you don't have another vehicle for everyday use. You could, of course, lie...

They can't, but they can refuse to offer you cover for the classic if you don't.
Insurers can't dictate to you what you must do but they can set their own acceptance criteria for their products.
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

I currently have my Puma on classic policy and before that mk2 Golf. When I was getting quotes and had no other vehicles then I didn't get classic offered as mileage was much higher. I'm now on 2000 miles pa as I have other cars for day to day but I'm sure the age is generally 25+ for the policyholder.
