Hi all
I am sure many of you have previously had the same predicament and been in the same position. My 18 year old son passed his test 5 days ago and is now as eager as any youngster is to buy his first car. Naturally, this can't be done until we have secured insurance and that is the reason for my thread. Yes, I am aware of the comparison websites etc and I have no problem ringing round a few insurers. However, I was hoping you guys may have some 'extra' tips/advice etc such as 'xxxx insurance company are overpriced or xxx insurance company specialise in teenagers etc' or even tips on vehicles and insurance groups etc.
In true moneysaving style Any advice on getting a cheap policy suitable for my son would be welcome before we jump in at the deep end.
Thanks in advance

My daughter used Confused.com
Do a PassPlus course.
Agree to have a black box fitted.
Consider a vehicle that can be insured on a Classic Car Policy as they can be very cheap when compared to the usual suspects like a Corsa or Clio.0 -
I'd start by looking at cars that are not the usual 18 year old newly passed driver cars. I know a friend who had a pickup truck that only cost £800 to insure despite big engine presumably because it wasn't something that was seen as so risky for an 18 year old to be in.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

Good idea.
Though if I was going that route I would look at Series Land Rovers or Defenders aswell.0 -
Some interesting advice already. Thank You all.

Not correct. I went on Autotrader and saw a vehicle for sale exactly as he wants. Vehicle was £8,000. Tesco Box insurance is £22000 -
If he/you are willing to spend £8000 on a car but think the £2200 on insurance is too much, then why not spend £5800 on a car?
Unfortunately, even after the advice others have given above, it's going to be expensive he we wants a car like that.0 -
Given that statistically 23% of guys 18-24 crash in their first 2 years getting a sporty hot hatch is a risk.
I looked on autotrader and can see 8 of them for £8000 - one 123bhp petrol and several 94bhp diesel - seems like a silly idea to me - £2200 on insurance for a car which will be overpowered for his level of experience and may encourage him to rag it around is asking for the premium to go up once they track him racing people off the lights and speeding!Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

If he wants a Fiesta Zetec S then he needs to consider finding £3/4000 a year for Insurance.
Edit: Just saw he has a quote for £2200.
If he was my son he would not be allowed a car like that. End of story.0
