it's a really odd shaped car, I always saw it like a saloon car that had the midsection cut off and then joined up to make it a 2 seater. it doesn't look right.

There was an episode of Wheeler Dealers a couple of years ago on an identical car.

Some common faults were dealt with if I remember correctly.

Join an owners forum, buy a Haynes or other vehicle manual and enjoy.

I remember that one, Mike got it cheap as the roof didn't work and it was a quick hydrolic pump swap. I'll see if I can find it on you tube.
  • Anyone had one? Anything I should look out for (besides buying a tanning salon). Jim.

Lock the doors when you stop the car, for example at traffic lights, as otherwise, women tend to jump into the passenger seat when they see it.

I dont know if this true or not but a Merc owner told me his heater motor packed in and a replacement was £900 ! not including labour. The CLK looks nice, is nt really a sports car, has no real speed performance or handling and it may well be the money sucking thing which bankrupts you.

  • That looks a nice one.

Ignore the jibes above, those worried about their preferences need something to extend their image to extend their image as it were , to impress other similarly doubting males oddly enough :p, you obviously arn't worried in that direction .

Look after it, service it religiously treat it to some underbody anti rust prevention, and enjoy it.

Heater motors do pack in on Mercedes of this era, a £5 set of new motor brushes is the fix.

Sorry, I will leave out the cheap joke which got half my post deleted but has the OP considered just getting the worlds most popular sports car, the Mazda MX5. It wont have the bankrupting spare parts of the flash Merc but it will certainly drive, handle and look much better than the CLK and wont attract ignorant comments like mine.
PS, has anyone tried to get to a Mercedes heater motor never mind repair it.I took ages to get to a mere Ford Fiesta Mk 1 heater motor and thats a job I would nt willingly face again as standing on my head in the footwell is nt fun

With the W202, you can change brushes with the heater motor in situ; brushes accessed from the passenger side; quite an easy job I understand but I have not done it myself. Don't know about SLK but might be similar.
  • Yes W124 accessible from under the wiper mechanism from above, so i too expect it to be a reasonable job on the SLK.

MB's of this era usually fairly well thought out with repair and individual parts available for decades.
