For the last ten years I have not spent more than £600 on a car and have really enjoyed and been an advocate of bagernomics.

Vauxhall Astra 1.7td £495
Rover 600 £495
Saab 9-3 495
Vauxhall Astra 1.6 £600

The Astra 1.6 is going fine with nothing wrong with it and it's MOT till August. Its very cheap to run and has been 100% reliable but....

God i'm bored with it so....

I've just bought this-

It's a 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK 2.3 Kompressor. Its done 76,500 miles and has sat in a barn since April and is rust free. Its MOT's till October but the chap is putting a new one on it for me as part of the price. Hopefully I should be able to collect it on Wednesday and hopefully the sun will be out.

I've never had a convertible before and I have spent the last week looking for a CLK but I've compromised over this due to it's great rust free condition.

I've sold the Astra to a colleague in the office for the same I paid for it and the Merc is £2k, fortunately I've had a good 2015 and combined with a bonus its paid for. Glad petrol is 99p a go as I feel I am about to use a lot more of it.

Anyone had one? Anything I should look out for (besides buying a tanning salon). Jim.

funnily enough I was looking at a 2004 one recently that came up at a decent price, simply not practical for me given my current situation but they sure are one of the prettiest mercs ever.
    Enjoy that little beauty..
  • Yes, had exactly the same model and colour and sold it last year after 11 happy years motoring with it. Didn't find fuel consumption too bad, but then our other car is a V8.......
Running costs were inexpensive except for a replacement vacuum pump - this drowned silently in the boot after unknown water ingress and not only controls the roof, but also the central locking.
These Mercs rust away around the wheel well sills, so check and repair if necessary.

Cracking little car, always brought a smile when driving it, looked great for its age. Other thing to possibly happen is a relay fault which is difficult to diagnose -google k42 relay I think it is. Easy to replace.

Good luck and enjoy it! We miss ours a lot still!

I've had some stick at work already about mid life crisis etc! I wish I needed hair straighteners but those days are far behind me.:rotfl:

Nice looking car, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

The best top down weather is nice & overcast. ;)

When I had my mid life crisis I bought an MGB.
I'd had loads of MGs, spitfires etc in my youth, and driven top down all weathers (don't stop in the rain and you don't get wet).

However, I noticed that having the top down in the sunshine I could actually feel the deadly cancer giving rays of the sun burning my flesh.
Bit like riding a motorbike in the summer just makes you hot & sweaty.

So I never used the thing when it was "nice" as I'd rather sit in the shade with the air-con on. :o
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

I have exactly the same questions about my Ford Puma!

SLK looks a great car, hope you have as much fun driving it!

There was an episode of Wheeler Dealers a couple of years ago on an identical car.

Some common faults were dealt with if I remember correctly.
