Fibre Broadband

I am thinking of getting Fibre Broadband because our current speed is not enough for the people using it (average 3-5Mb)
We can get' Up to 38 Mb' with fibre but is there any way to see the speed we will most probably get before committing to a contract?
It appears you need a new router although the new ones also work with ADSL
Is Fibre more reliable than ADSL?
I suppose the main question I am asking is:Is it worth the extra money?

It may be slightly more reliable but not by much.
I believe it's worth the extra money if you can at least get 5 times faster internet and yes you can ask for an estimate of the line speed before you sign up. It won't be an accurate figure but it should be close enough.
What affects the speed the most is the distance to the street cabinet. The street cabinet here in my house is right outside the property so I get the full line speed of 76Mbps. In my last property the cabinet was about 200 metres away and the line speed was about 30Mbps and the property before that the cab was about 400 metres away and I was getting 20Mbps.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Thanks for the reply.
I asked what speed I would get and was only told 'Up to 38 Mb'!
I have done a quick google to see what the cabinet looks like so I will see how far away it is from the house.0 -

You can get more information e.g. your cab No. here

Pop your number into here https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/adsl.htm?s_cid=ws_furls_adslchecker and post the results. Remove your number before posting though.
If you're with sky, I don't think the number checker works, in which case use the address checker on the same page0 -
Also it can also affect you if you have copper wiring to your house and have far the exchange is, as with fibre it slows down a lot quicker over copper wiring than normal broadband does. So you may get told you will have a certain speed to the exchange. though depending on how far away you are you may end up getting slightly more download speeds or worse case less.... Though this is normally the case for people who live in rural areas.0

For fibre to the cabinet, the distance from the exchange is relevant.
What you say is correct though in that the distance you are from the cabinet dictates your achievable speed. And that VDSL2 (the technology used for FTTC) doesn't have the same reach as ADSL services.
If the OP posts the results of the checker we will be able to see the expected speeds and as a result advise on the best service/package for their needs.0 -
i found the cabinet and it's less than 200 meters from the house.
Because the telephone is not a BT one I got this data using postcode

Use the address checker, not the postcode checker.0

It makes a bit more sense with the address checker! It would not let me copy and paste the results so I had to save them as a pdf and copy and paste from the pdf hence the poor layout.

Your estimated speeds are between 17.5 and 11.9meg. You may get more than this though, they are just an estimated.
Of course you may get less, but if you do get less and Openreach can't improve the line to get speeds above the 11.9meg then your ISP will not be able to hold you to contract should you wish to leave and go to another provider.0
