Thanks for the tips.. So it looks like a 100gb or 160gb (with screen saver) disk or smaller is required and definitely not a 200gb or 300gb.

When I opened the case noticed the power switch on the front of the unit cut the 240v power to the unit so turning it off turns it to zero power. The remote puts it into stand-by.

This is a change from last year's model where the on/off on the front was the same as the remote and there was a real 240v switch on the rear.

Also uses the Zoran 888 chip: http://www.zoran.com/Vaddis-R-888

    Just thought I'd mention it.

Bit annoyed with the way ALDI did not put all the details on this unit the web page did not mention DivX or CF support.

Seems like a good player, one I get the HD working ;) Glad to see others have managed this thanks for the tips.

Loved last years model this one is smaller.

Glad you got it working Seth - I think a better written manual could have saved us all some time, but when isn't that true?!

I notice I was wrong about it displaying only 8 folder/filename characters - it actually displays 15, which is far more useful.

As for drive size it won't read my 500GB (yes, I did format it FAT32) but it does work perfectly with the 250GB drive in my Freecom Mediaplayer, so I think 300GB is probably the real limit.

So now we've got the USB port sussed, let's just hope all our DVD loaders don't fall over in the next couple of days!

    :D
  • This latest Aldi HDMI DVD (which is a Tevion DVD 2007-F) can be made multi-region in less than a minute :

    Open the disc tray
Using the remote, press the 9 digit four times
    Wait 1 to 2 seconds
Using the remote, press the 9 digit five times
    That's it !

Have just done it on mine and it works a treat.
  • Returning to whether HDMI improves picture quality...

I have last year's model, connected via HDMI, as well as a DVD recorder connected via SCART. If I take a disc recorded on the recorder and place it in the player, the picture quality is noticeably better. However, I suspect this is because one is digital and the other analogue and has nothing to do with any upscaling that's going on.

Incidentally, although the old model doesn't have a USB port, I'm pretty sure I remember seeing some forum or other where people had soldered one on in place of the card reader.

    Yes - I saw that too! A German did it first I think;

    And then it was reported here and elsewhere in English;

I don't think the mod 'replaces' the card reader - it just makes use of the existing USB header on it, so you can use sticks and cards.

I even contemplated getting a DVD8000 off Ebay and having a go myself, but my soldering is terrible and the reports on the player were mixed - it sounded a bit flaky. I think I did right holding on for this one - it's really grown on me.

    :)
  • Hi Guys

I have been after one of these DivX players for some time now and I have not had the chance to go around shops and look! To be honest with you I do not really know what im looking for as in I know i want a DivX player that has a USB connection (basically play anything) and also a 5.1 output as I want to connect my surround sound system to it!!

The one that was in Aldi seemed to be OK but there were some negative feedback about it. The one from ebuyer (Sumvision DVD HDMI Upscaler Black + DivX) seemed very good but unfortunately they do not have the item anymore!!

So I was wondering as some as you guys/girls know what you are talking about can you please tell me if there is any like the one from ebuyer floating around the web or any other place and also at a reasonable price (around £40)??

    Thankz in advance!!!

Well my Aldi (Tevion) player is still going strong after a couple of months and I keep seeing them in the branches local to me.

I really don't think you'll find a better value player, not with a decent HDMI cable and a 3 year warranty included for £35, either in the shops or online.

And I looked for a LONG time.

    :)
  • Decided to take your advice Lütz Pangaloo, went to my local aldi store.. and guess what they did not have any:mad: .

    This is in Halifax.

Words of advice - check the buttons on the front of the player. After using mine for a few weeks using only the remote, I found out yesterday that the buttons on the front of the player itself don't work!

Tevion/Medion not my favourite company to deal with on their warranty (given my own experiences).

Look for PHILIPS at Amazon for around £40
You can also make it multiregion very simply...............
