Aldi DVD Player - HDMI & USB for £35!

I've just got the flyer for this Thursday's specials at Aldi, and this caught my eye;

There's not much in the way of specifications, but there's already been speculation on other boards that it's just the same Tevion 8000 they rolled out last year with the Zoran Vadis 888 chip but flaky build.

I don't think it is though - the 8000's tray is in the middle, whereas this new one is off to the left, and the remote is totally different. I think this is a picture of the new one from the front;

If anyone can pin it down with a model number and a more detailed spec I promise to hit the 'Thank You' button.

I have last year Aldi player and use if everyday, it works really well replace my KISS DP-1000 player that cost me £200.

This new one looks even better.

Is it USB 1.0 and will it support external Hard disks with external power?

My concern is the data rate on USB 1.x can be too low for Xvid/DivX on hi-def content such as the legal content on dl.tv and Nasa's hi def video.

Any details on this appreciated is there a number for the help line?

This doesn't look as if it's divx capable, not according to the spec anyway.

Agreed better than the Alid as this does DivX/Xvid any specs on the Sumvision?

Review say USB 2 but then there are comments on audio stutter which makes me wonder if it is USB 1.x

Any reviews or comments from owners welcome

I've just bought a samsung surround sound dvd system from currys for £199 - before you get a heart attack with the price, it was the best I could find with a hdmi upscaler, usb and (most important for me!) optical input for connecting my xbox 360.

Yes - I was quite taken by this one. It looks nice, but something stopped me - I think it was dearer when I looked before.

Ofcourse by the time you've added a HDMI lead and delivery it'll be almost £45, and I much prefer just popping to my local Aldi, who have always been great if I've had to take anything back.

I think some areas of the spec for the Aldi one are just ambiguous rather than poor - it's difficult to imagine a new DVD player that doesn't handle Divx, and surely it can also read DVD-R/RW media? It's a bit offputting that Tevion don't have a proper website of their own to check details on.

The fact it has a built-in DTS decoder is important to me - my Denon receiver is only DD - I just need it to have all the other stuff too! I don't know why it's so difficult to find info on it - if the German link I posted is the same model, they were selling it in Germany back in May, so there must be a few out there.

I was hoping somebody would recognise it and fill us in, but it looks like I'll have to go and suss it out myself on Thursday.

Can some one explain please why you want an ordinary DVD player with HDMI ? Surely the quality is not that much different to an ordinary DVD player or is it? I thought you would be better waiting for a blu-ray or HD DVD player )or a player that may play both formats to come down in price, as I am sure they will in the next year or so

sod it , i have ordered the one from e-buyer simply because i cannot be bothered to que on thursday.

OH NO! I've just found a player on the German Ebay site which I think is the same spec as the Aldi one (looks the same anyway) - and it's a cracker!
