I think that could be your problem - it says in the manual (page 21) that only ten(!) folders in total and two levels are supported on USB devices and cards (for some reason DVD players always seem to have these stupid restrictions). You can have up to 100 files in each folder. Great!
I've just connected my 160GB externally powered drive and although it recognised there was something attached, it just said 'Loading' for a minute before the screensaver kicked in and a minute after that the screen went black!
My drive has loads of MP3s and AVIs in the root directory, but also quite a few DVDs each with there own folder structure - I'm going to have a go at tidying it up tonight.0 -
HI There
thanks for the reply, i noticed the instructions but since my pendrive worked with about 15 folders on i was optimistic that the HDD may work
I'll spend a bit of time tomorrow trying a few things. Let me know if you get yours working and i'll do the same.
Thanks

I did a quick test last night with my Venturer 40 Gb MP3 player which I use as a portable drive and it displayed about 100 folders on the root all of which I could go into - more info here

Annoyingly, this requires registration to view I'm afraid.
Forgot about that - too used to automatic login, here's a paste of my thread there
Tevion DVD 8001
Hooray - No more flaffing about with scart connection to set the menu to HDMI - there are buttons on the remote for this.
Normal DVD -> HD output looks very good on toshiba 42 lcd viewed from 4 ft.
DivX is no longer supported in this Model.
DivX 4.11 and 4.12 on CD media work fine as does XviD however DivX 5.0 does picture only - no sound and I assume 6 wont work either (no divX 6 to try here)
USB 2.0 connection - My portable HD which is actually a Venturer 40Gb MP3 player (the cheapo one from argos last year) worked with this right away. The USB doesnt do a folder depth greater than 2 which is a bit disappointing. But I can adapt to that if need be.
USB video - using the Venturer - tried a few downloaded tv shows on the root folder and in a folder called 'AVI' - they all played . The file format was Xvid with AVI extension. all around 350Mb for 45 to 50 minutes.
USB audio - the available MP3s on the Venturer - all played , some WMA files played OK while some showed up as 'invalid media format' or something like that.
I do have a problem with 4:3 aspect ratio movies for which I need to adjust using the TV remote but this could be due my Set(there is no auto setting that I can find).
All in all - looks a like a bargain to me.

CORRECTION - This is not quite true - just checked the drive involved - it only has 7 directories on the root and it was a subfolder that i could browse hundreds of directories. I will double check if they are reachable to play media content after work finishes. The content I did check was on the root folder or in the first layer of sub directories.
My Apologies to All,

Odd findings USB on Tevion DVD 8001
JPGs
I can go below the 2 folder depth for jpgs - i.e
/data/pics/picsdecember/
and view the jpegs there, but cant get to
/data/pics/picsdecember/picsxmas/
as it doesnt show.
nb. the data folder contains 50+ folders which can be browsed for content
MP3
Made a folder 'music' and stuck 12 album folders in it ie
/music/albumname/
They all show and play, but cant get to
/music/albumname/test/
AVI
similar results to MP3 - 2 folder depth
ROOT FOLDERS
Copied a bunch of folders from my music collection to the root folder (to make a total of 23)
All are showing,accessible and playable.
about the drive:
its an mp3 player that I use as a portable drive. It is not formatted in windows as that would kill it as a MP3 player instead It formats itself as fat 32.
The folders etc are made/deleted using XP , Vista or Ubuntu.
It is also the slower USB1.1 type connection.

USB is recognised but no files are listed I get an empty directory listing.
Perhaps its the USB chipset (it is a USB2.0 enclosure)
Anyone had any similar problems?
DIVx 5 work well off DVD and memory card works fine, might be fault on my unit or USB compatibility?Seth.0 -
I just reformatted my 160GB usb2 drive using fat32format on winXP and copied a single 250mb avi to the root but i'm still getting the problem where the screen displays "loading" for a few minutes then the screen goes black.
pendrive works so could be incompatible with my drive.0 -

I'm not sure what you mean in that first line. It does say in the manual it supports DivX 3.11, 4+, 5+ and 5+ Pro (granted no mention of 6), and even though it doesn't mention Xvid either it's got an 'Xvid Home' logo painted on the front edge of the player itself (whatever that means).
Last night mine played a small AVI (;) ) on a no-name USB stick perfectly - Gspot said it was DivX 3.11 with WMA audio.
Now I've got it downstairs happily playing Talladega Nights, picture and sound, which is DivX 5.0 encoded with AC3 audio! Indeed the Dolby Digital symbol is lit up in the display on the Tevion!
And even more bizarrely, I'm using a Kingston Datatraveller stick, which is supposedly 'unsupported'. I dunno!
