    it was the best I could find with a hdmi upscaler...
    What does an HDMI upscaler give you more than precisely nothing? Your TV contains an upscaler anyway, and it will process even "upscaled" signals to overscan them, making the quality worse than feeding in ordinary material because it is being mangled twice.

    Upscalers do not produce high definition pictures - it is impossible to conjure information out of nothing.

    is this true ? i've just bought a dvd /vcr combi with hdmi 1080 upscaler to connect to my hdmi tv - will my picture be worse than a normal scart connection ? if so i'll just connect via scart cable and disconnect the hdmi cable..............

    Is the Philips DVD player with USB, HDMi and DIVX deal not kicking around anymore.

    I think it was around £39 delivered and got excellent reviews at avforums.

    If I were not so lazy I would search for links etc

    EDIT
    OK here is one.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-DVP5960-Multi-region-capable-upscaling/dp/B000G2Y59E/ref=pd_bbs_1/026-3233631-7761206?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1188975201&sr=8-1

  • OH no, not the Sumvision. Personally I would give the Sumvision a wide wide berth and go for the Philips.

    Here is a thread were I reported my experiences of the Sumvision

    AV Forum

    I ended up buying the Philips 5960 and it does all I wanted it to

    If you decide on the Sumvision, buy it somewhere where it is handy to take it back, incase you have problems like I did.

    Exactly - pointless marketing which means absolutely nothing.

    Edit: But not all HD sets have HDMI inputs!

    It depends - if you have a long, really cheapo SCART lead (and that doesn't mean not spending a fortune - as much marketing rubbish surrounds overpriced SCART leads as it does anything else) then you might have a problem with it. Otherwise, I don't suppose the picture will be noticeably worse - it's all a matter of proportion. You will get different problems with "upscalers" than with crappy SCART leads.
    if so i'll just connect via scart cable and disconnect the hdmi cable..............
    If both ends have SCART sockets, of course. If you have a SCART lead lying around, try it, and you decide which you prefer.

    OH NO! I've just found a player on the German Ebay site which I think is the same spec as the Aldi one (looks the same anyway) - and it's a cracker!

    Here;

    http://cgi.ebay.de/Tevion-Slimline-DivX-Player-DvD-2007-F-USB-Cardslot_W0QQitemZ170144137609QQihZ007QQcategoryZ8329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    which gives the model as Tevion 2007-F, and here with a more detailed spec;

    http://cgi.ebay.de/DVD-Player-DivX-Xvid-HDMI-VGA-MP3-USB-Nero-si_W0QQitemZ130149136144QQihZ003QQcategoryZ66126QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    and a detailed test here (all in German ofcourse, but it's easy enough to understand, especially when you see the big rosette with five stars on it at the end!);

    http://www.dv-rec.de//test/player2007/Tevion2007F/tevion.html

    I'm going to get one and I don't even need a new dvd player!

    :)

    EDIT: Anybody want my old Panasonic? I've still got the box.

    Do you know if Aldi ARE selling the same model as the German site...

    It is the same Zoran 888 chipset as the HDMI player they sold last year with a newer drive, USB 2.0 The screen shots look just like last years model.

    Can anyone confirm it does to DivX and USB2 can be used for external HDs to play DivX?

    I think I will buy one and see!

    Oh and many Xvid/DivX are HD 720 or 560 at least so the HDMI does make sense for a xVid/DivX player. I've not seen and 1024i xVid as the CPUs on these low end system are not up to it.

    I am fussy about video and last years model was superb!
    Seth.
