Melly, I hope you manage to get your beautifying at the weekend. You really deserve/need someone doing something nice for you and if there's anything any of us can do to help then just holler.

    Hi all,
Back from the show. We got there as soon as it opened so it wasn't too busy, but it was getting very uncomfortable when we left. Huge freebie goodie bags, lots of tasters and tummy behaved :)

Having a bed rest now to unwind and also drinking lots of water. I'm trying to get back into knitting but keep dropping stitches  I think my fingers have forgotten what to do!
Melly your pic hasn't loaded properly, I'm guessing it's something lovely and furry :)

Got the shakes and upset. Penguin sick animal
Just seen a missed call on my phone from the local vets and its got me all stressed and angry. I found a hedgehog in my garden a few weeks ago acting strange (first one I've seen in 20 years) and I wasn't sure if he was injured. I tried both the office and mobile number of the nearest wildlife sanctuary and couldn't get a reply. I rang the local vets and asked if they could look at it and check he was ok and they said to leave it with them and the vet would look at it when he had a moment. I dropped it off and said I'd pick him up later to release him back where I found him.
The vet called later and said it had a broken jaw and puncture wound like something had attacked it and he thought he'd best put it to sleep. I said would it be worth trying the sanctuary again and he said that his vet group dealt with the sanctuary anyway so not much point. I said I don't interfere with wildlife normally but he said its injury meant it would have had a slow painful death, so it was for the best I had bought it in.
Anyway they have no reason to ring me but I know from past dealings that they make billing calls on Fridays and I'm actually wondering if they are going to have the audacity to bill me for putting the hedgehog to sleep?! It's really stressing me out and if it is that then I'm appalled because being made to pay for an injured wild animal seems not only morally wrong, but will put me off trying to get help for one in the future which means next time another one might have to suffer a slow and painful death. I'm so upset and angry. I really don't know if I should call them tomorrow or see when they next call me. Probably best to call them but I hate hate hate confrontation, but I don't think it right that I should pay either. So upset now

    Penguin end

    Dandy, don't worry.

Vets are obliged to treat wild animals and not charge the person who brings them in.

I took a bird to mine once, and was told that. I nursed it at home and took it in twice more for check-ups, all with no charge.

You phoned them and they said to bring it in. If they had been going to charge you, they would have said there and then, but as I've said, they are obliged to treat wild animals brought to them, so please don't worry. :A

Oh I hope so Pyxis. They're quite a money grabbing bunch there and I just can't think of any other reason they'd have to call me as we don't have any pets anymore.

Found this on an RSPCA thing:

"To ensure treatment is available for all sick or injured wild animals, we have an agreement with the British Veterinary Association (BVA).
This Memorandum of Understanding clarifies the arrangements between vets in private practices and the RSPCA regarding Initial Emergency Treatments (IETs).
    It states that:
    • During practice hours small wild mammals and wild birds should be treated free of charge if they are brought to a veterinary surgery. Vets are obliged by their professional code to provide any necessary pain relief or euthanasia.
    • Out of practice hours, or if a larger wild animal is involved e.g. a deer, the RSPCA will contribute to the cost of the IET or euthanasia."

Elsewhere it says that vets aren't obliged to give long courses of treatment, just obliged to relieve suffering. Courses of treatment would be undertaken by wildlife centres/sanctuaries, etc., which is fair enough.

Omg Pyxis you are a marvel. I'm actually in tears here reading that, I can't thank you enough. I have a leg to stand on now if they try charging me! A million hugs to you, it had me so upset. Not what I needed just after coming off my meds! Xx

I expect he just wanted to let you know the position and save you the trip there.

I must admit, injuries to jaws of wild animals don't really have a good prognosis. A pet at home, yes, as you can give special food and keep them safe, but in a wild animal, it would be very difficult.

You did your very best and saved it from suffering.
