I got a white aubergine in my veg box this morning!

I vaguely knew they existed, you know, like purple carrots, but I'd never actually had one!

Trouble is, I think all the anti-oxidants are in the purple colour, so the white one might not be as nutritious!

I just googled white aubergines and apparently they're the reason why Americans call it an eggplant - originally all aubergines were white so, when they were hanging from the plant, they looked like eggs :D

Wow! I never knew that! I just thought it was the shape, even though they're not all that egg-shaped!

Must admit, this white one is more rounded and more egg-like, albeit a very large egg!

I wonder why they decided to breed them to be purple?

I was trying to remember when I first ate an aubergine. Didn't have them as children. Must have been when I was a teenager.

Am I right in thinking that the purple carrots were the original ones, and the orange ones came later?

I think that carrots too were originally white, and bred to be orange. Something to do with William of Orange, apparently.

    I think.

Just googled........original colour was between a dirty white and pinkish purple, so we're both right!

  • I love vegetables, but I've never tried an aubergine before. Aren't they the ones that can go abit slimy?

Yeah, they are. There's a slight tendency for them to be a bit bitter if they're overcooked as well.

They are absolutely divine when cooked well though.
  • What do they taste like?
