    Morning Shipmates,

Sunny here at the moment. Another bad nights sleep. oh well never mind LOL!!!

Massive hugs, handshakes and squishes all round. Aging is not always kind to people.

Anyway pulled my lunch out the freezer to defrost. Some fish cakes. Only august last year  If you don't hear from me later you know the reason why :rotfl:

Everyone remember be kind to yourself as you maybe the only person who is to you today.

That must be so horribly difficult.

    Morning All,
Why is that bank holidays always seem to be over so quickly? It probably didn't help that I was working on Saturday but it absolutely flew by!!
I also can't believe that I've reached the age where I spent a Sunday morning wandering around a garden centre!! I also managed to enjoy the sunshine, my mother-out-law was up for the weekend so we popped round to my parents' and sat out in their garden for a while.

Then, more normally for us, went out with friends in the evening and spent yesterday being hungover and lazy and catching up with loads of recorded telly.

Code, yes, do persevere, as I'm sure it helped me and that wasn't even why I was using it! It took me about a week to get to get used to it.

Also, this probably won't help, but keep reinforcing into your memory the good memories of the discussions you used to have, 'cos they will really help. Penguin about parents. One of my parents died when I was young, so I never had an adult conversation with them, and the other wasn't ever capable of discussion as everything I said was wrong. It would be nice to have some happy memories of chats. :A:A End penguin.

Hope you've got happy memories of your hols, Ono! will there be any pics?
Are you skirting round the turtle issue? :rotfl:

I failed on the turtle issue, I was going to put my hand in the bocca della verita and declare it, but whenever I passed (it was on one of the routes between the hotel and the Colosseum) it was either closed (in the morning) or had a huge queue (on my way back late afternoon when I just wanted to sit down before dinner).

I do intend to upload some pictures. I need to go back sometime to visit all the places I didn't have time for!

Yes, Georgie! You can change the fast days. Have you read the book? It's much easier if you read the book first.

Also remember that like with any new regime, the first week is the worst. Good luck!

Thanks! When I woke up this morning, I felt so hungry, and I never feel hungry in the morning! I thought 'oh, well that's a good start isn't it, I'm going to be ravenous by tea time!' It was because I could still smell the jerk chicken from last nights tea and it smelt yummy! But, I've kept myself busy, and it hasn't been so bad.

I'm sure we've got the book upstairs, so I'll dig it out and have a read. :)

It's very sad Georgie. My dad has always been i intelligent and quick witted and we used to debate politics and wind each other up. We didn't get on well when I was younger because I was never his favourite but we sorted it out a couple of years ago. Now everytime I talk to him he offers endless cups of tea (I don't drink tea) and asks if I'm going on holiday. It's like being at the hairdresser and my dad is just...gone. Sometimes you see glimpses and that's really hard because then I remember who he used to be. And it's been so fast. 6 years ago he was capable of running. Its only been in the last 2-3 years. The psychiatrist says he hasn't got dementia (I'm not sure I agree with that) but a series of tias has definitely damaged his brain and he's in his 80s so it's only going to get worse. :(

Penguin reply to Georgie Good luck with the 5:2. I kind of liked the fast days - it was a challenge to use the 500 calories wisely. I can't do i it anymore because of medication issues but it wasn't terribly hard after the first couple of days. I usually saved the calories for dinner - 1/2 can of heinz minestrone soup is something like 69 calories and you can have loads of salad.

I am getting back on the wagon myself today. Restricting sweets and crisps. I honestly think I have a problem with crisps. I actively crave them.

Your relationship with your Dad sounds very like the one I had with mine. (Apart from the politics discussions!) Your Dad sounds lovely, a kind, witty and interesting gentleman, and to see that fading away is so sad. It's a cruel cruel thing. ((((Code))))

That's how I see the 5:2 diet too, as a challenge. I'm quite competitive and so respond well to things like that where you actually
have to keep to a certain amount of calories, it makes it more interesting. I am really hungry now though and am looking forward to tea!

Interesting to know about the soup. Minestrone is one of my favourites, although I am used to having a full tin and so I guess it's getting more used to having to reduce portion sizes. I also usually have about 2-3 slices of bread which will be a big no no.

I'm the same with crisps. I've always loved crisps every since I was little and have a much more savoury tooth than a sweet one. Most nights I have crisps, I love the salty ness of them, and so that's going to be the hardest thing for me I think.

Good luck to you too in cutting down on crisps and chocolate
    . :)

    Penguin end.

This is what we're having for tea http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/5588/healthy-egg-and-chips

I enjoy cooking, so this 5:2 will encourage me to try out even more new recipes.

Had to leave work at lunchtime, I seem to have bought a cold back with me which gradually got worse and has wiped me out. Hoped I would be able to muddle through the day and clear the email backlog, but was forced to admit defeat. Pleased that it didn't affect the holiday though, which was excellent. As I said I want to go back to visit all the places I missed, and I would stay in the same b&b. It's a beautiful Italian villa with stone floors and staircases, high ceilings and so on, and the owner is charming and helpful. What I often thought about, as I always do when holidaying alone, is how much more enjoyable it would be to share, so all I need is to find a girlfriend who prefers holidays spent walking (20,000 to 30,000 steps each day according to the health app on my phone ) around cities visiting museums, galleries, archeological remains, cafes and restaurants, rather than roasting on a beach.

The upheaval at work I was worried about from before my holiday, indeed couldn't stop thinking / worrying about while I was away, is not happening and our employer has given us a very strong indication he would be receptive to our (the employees) alternative plans for the future, which is also very scary, but in a much better way due to the opportunities it could present. No idea if what we want to do is even feasible, but the prospect is exciting. So, feeling positive about the future today, for the first time in a very long time, despite also feeling absolutely run down health wise.

Gosh! Lots to think about, Ono!

Scary and exciting at the same time!

The villa sounds lovely! Was it far from the centre?

The b&b is about halfway up the hill from Trastavere to Gianicolo, so coming back at the end of the day meant a climb!
