If it helps I am constantly telling my mum and dad just to press buttons and see what happens. You aren't going to break anything.

If its not compatible and you browse the play store on your phone it wont show up at all, try here: https://play.google.com/store/apps?hl=en_GB and then sign in with your google account after selecting the app you want to download, if all is good you can install apps form the PC/web version of google play

    Intuitive!!!
    What does that mean.

This is the first mobile phone I've had in nearly 30 years.

1st mobile you had in 30yrs and you choose one that's not a recognised brand

I'm not saying you should of bought an iPhone or Samsung galaxy but could of opted for a more well known brand

On an old htc I have, if I search for an app eg telegram and tap it to open I'm told "your device isn't compatible with this version".

I'm aware of the Xiomi brand, although i would recommend that you download an alternative launcher, as the Xiomi launcher behaves very very differently to the standard android phone launchers.
If you install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.launcher&hl=en_GB it should make your phone work so that the online help guides will make much more sense.

A launcher is the way a phone looks, feels and interacts, so when you turn the phone on it dictates what the home screen looks like, and how apps/widgets are arranged, accessed and launched ( started) The Xiomi launcher looks similar to apples ios, and can be very confusing especialy if your new to smart phones/android as the android user guides online do not match what is on the phone
