DBAN not working

Hi
im trying to wipe my laptop before reloading it. I have a disk with DBAN loaded onto it but i can get to the blue DBAN loading screen and i enter start in interactive mode. It then says loading but goes back to my log on screen not giving me option to delete anything. What am i doing wrong please?

    re-installing windows7 or replacing vista with a licensed windows7?

dban is an unnecessary step, the partitions can be overwritten by the installation process.

you probably have a diagnostic and recovery partition along with a larger c: partition, you'll have to decide if you want to keep them

As above, DBAN is the "nuclear option". Short of physically destroying the drive, DBAN is the most secure method. If you're keeping the drive yourself, just formatting it and reinstalling Windows will be sufficient. Over time, as stuff gets moved around the drive, it will become harder for anyone to recover any old data anyway.

If Windows was preinstalled on your laptop, you'd normally have a recovery partition that you'd use to reinstall the OS. DBAN may have wiped that, so you might need to download an ISO image from Microsoft.

If you want to repartition or format partitions, GParted is brilliant. There's a live version so you can run it on a PC without an OS installed. Technically, it's based on Linux, but don't let that put you off. It boots to a desktop, you click the GParted icon, and view or adjust your partitions from there.

If you are using the latest version of DBAN try downloading an older version. If you are using an older version, try the latest version :)

It's worked for me in the past

  • I just installed a Linux Distro over the entire disk, then it's open doors for further OS's.

Simply ignore the playful/unhelpful/trollist comment about Linux distros.

bsod, esuhl and NiftyDigits have already given you the answer:
    just reload Windows 7.
