Boil enough pasta for 2 people.Drain.
Mash up some pilchards/sardines but leave them lumpy. Add to pasta.
Add the grated rind and juice of one lemon.
Add a handful of raisins and some pine nuts.
    Warm through.

If it looks a little dry for your taste add some olive oil or creme fraiche.

I have used pilchards in olive oil and also the cheap ones in tomato sauce which I rinse before using and then that offsets the cost of the pine nuts a little!

Are they fresh or tinned (which can be plain or in tomato sauce :) ). I love sardines in tomato sauce on toast :T

i've never done fresh ones at home (but had them grilled in resturant.

now, tinned ones, in tomatoe sauce, either mashed cold or heated through in the saucepan, on buttered toast, or to be really posh on top of toasted crumpet with some cheddar on then grilled, now you're talking...:T

In sauce, she spotted some on offer at Mr M's and got 3 tins.

Can they be eaten straight from the tin? Can i warm them?

Mmm haven't had sardines for ages. I mash them up cold and put them onto cold buttered brown toast, with slices of cucumber ontop.

You can eat them straight from the tin or warmed up :)There's an older thread here with more ideas; I'll add this later.

Thank you, just had a quick look. Cleared a few things up. I really need to learn my seafood a bit better, any good meal suggestions for a complete fish novice?

Both dd and ds like fish but I have some weird phobia against touching fish, its the scales, gives me the heebeegeebee's

Butter some toast. Top with mashed sardines in tomato sauce that you have mixed with a little vinegar or lemon juice, loads of chives and some grated cheese. Put some thinly sliced cheese on top and warm under the grill or in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Absolute heaven, packed with protein, vitamins and minerals and all for about 30-40 pence a tin!

You can use tinned sardines in most recipes where you'd use canned tuna, they're a great source of omega 3 and calcium, and they're super cheap - I prefer the ones in oil from Sainsburys. I like them in fishcakes, or whizzed up with some cottage cheese to make pate. Or just over some rice with stirfried veggies, a splash of soy sauce, and some sweet chili sauce. Yum!
