Not really. The thread is littered with examples of things that can go wrong with diesel cars. Long journey? Just take the train, save yourself the hassle...

I used DPF equipped diesels for years, all round London, from late 2005 till late 2011.

There where engine failures due to failed Regens and regular needs to take them for a run.

But to be honest they are still being used daily and most will likely have a minimum of 150k on the clock.

Maintenance needs to be spot on and you need to keep in mind that if it starts to Regen on the way home it is better to continue to drive if possible to prevent a failed Regen.

Only the Jaguar system (specifically the 3.0v6 don't know about the 2.7v6) which will not Regen unless at speed (I think it is 40kph) will need to be given a run, you can't even do a Forced Regen of a Jag diesel using Diagnostics when stationary, you have to take it for a run.

As long as you realise the limitations of a modern diesel with a DPF then they are fine.

A mates wife does less than 10k a year in her Merc diesel and has done so since it was bought new. Never given any DPF problems whatsoever.

My Pathfinder never have any DPF problems and none of the people that used it had issues, and it was sometimes used for Event Work when it would sit ticking over for hours on end. Fuel consumption was crap, 22mpg! You could get closer to 27mpg on a motorway run though. This was an Auto Euro4 spec.

I must admit that I will likely end up in an automatic diesel at some point in the next 3 years, probably a used Evoque.

For now I am happy not to have to worry about DPFs for a while.

My mk7 Golf has shown no problems in the last 2.5 years either, you will probably find dpf's and egr's will get more reliable with time and development.

I bang on about it a lot but the most important thing is to get regular oil/ filter and air filter changes (using correct oil) and put decent quality fuel in.

Unless your a rep doing lots of miles, the oil needs changing every year.
