OP It's not hard for me to assume that you did no research before this purchase, the classic "Golf is reliable" assumption comes from the mid-80s and is little more than a myth now 30 years later.

I can't tell you what to do now, but for most people a car is the 2nd biggest purchase they will ever make in their life time and at least now hopefully you will do your research next time, the best advice really is never to listen to non-car people (including salesmen) when considering a car purchase.

Short runs are bad for a car full stop, petrol and diesel.

I'm wondering how far off egr and dmf issues the op is?
  • I would be stunned if the dealership even entertained responding to the OP's communications regarding this. At the end of the day, Taradiamond1, as a customer you usually research what you're buying before making a decision. Sadly on this occasion this doesn't seem to have happened and it looks like it's going to cost you.

It wont fail MOT if you removed the DPF but keep the casing in place - which is what most people do.

    Yes it will.

I was of the same opinion as you but things have changed.

I am no fan of the DPF they cause increased fuel consumption and are an engineering lash up.

    But what can you do.

Apart from move to petrol, which I have done.

The MOt issue is minor compared to breaching Construction and Use Regs.
  • Hi

On another forum a number of people are reporting good results using a product called oxicat to help with DPF/EGR issues.

The OP may want to try a bottle to see if that helps.

A "special dpf clean" generally involves a jet wash. There isn't much that's special about that.

Doing long journeys is no guarantee when it comes to keeping a dpf clear. My husbands commute is a 40 mile motorway trip and we had his dpf changed in November because the old one had a large hole appear in the honeycomb inside the filter. Sometimes you're just unlucky and sometimes you're not.

A DPF clean is something that has been getting done for years on Buses and LGVs.

Only an idiot would try and clean a DPF with a jet washer.

A DPF will eventually fill up with Ash, there is nothing anybody can do about it, it's inevitable.

Ive heard of them being jet washed by a few different places now and was quite surprised by it. I'd assumed initially that was a joke. Either way, the dpf shouldn't block if it continues to regenerate, sadly ours wasn't doing so. :(

We'd pondered over bypassing ours but having looked over that link above its just as well we didn't.
