Options
As above if you walked into main dealer with pre reg cars available with approx 5% discount already, could you get any cash discount?

It depends on the car, some cars you can get over 20% discount on a new one.

Don't obsess on a percentage. Go for a price.

Do your research on Autotrader. Look at brokers. See what the market price is and aim for that.

I got new for less than my local dealer wanted to pre-registered. With virtually no hassle apart from driving to collect it.

We have three cars. One bought new. One at 3 months old (600 miles). One at 11 months old (4000 miles). In each case we were happy to buy new or nearly new - we bought the one which was best value.

Dealers can often do more if you're happy to do PCP.

umm doesn't make sense to offer more discount on a new car over a pre reg one..trying to work out why they would do that, even approaching target time it would be better for them to clear old stock and order new.

Loads of things don't make sense in the car sales world. ;)

First off the dealer offering 5% off a pre-reg is not the same dealer who will give you a good deal on a brand new model.

Secondly the word 'discount' is pretty near taboo in the motor trade - instead they offer 'incentives' or 'contributions'.

As for cash, new car sales people don't give two hoots about cash deals - they want to sell you finance.

So you play them at their own game - to start you get a firm offer from a broker, then take that to a few dealers and see who will match or even better the broker price.

Then you see what finance deals are available.

Using a combination of dealer contribution and manufacturer incentive, coupled to the finance company deposit contribution, I managed to get 22% off the list price before VAT. :D

I then paid off the finance early (after 3 days-so only paid 3 days interest charges) and kept the contribution.

It's a game of words - don't ask for discount - it's a contribution or incentive you want.

Don't ask about cancelling the finance either - that would mean returning the 'contribution' - what you do is settle it early - very early.

    Good luck.

Another aspect is that of cars at the end of their model life.

You can get around £10k off a merc E class at the moment, because the new one is due out in the summer. You won't get the same discounts off the new one.

I'd be looking a lot more than 5% off for a pre-reg, unless its some sort of "exclusive" car, which would mean they woudnt need to sell pre-reg ones?

Whats the exact car, and why are you thinking of buying a pre-reg with such a miserly discount, bearing in mind theres a new plate change coming up, so the pre-reg one will be worth less come resale time?

You will likely get a bigger discount using DrivetheDeal or similar.

And since some pre Reg are actually demonstrators hat are also used as people's company cars I don't see the attraction unless the deal is amazing.

We are talking about an actual car?

    Not something on Forza?

Not sure what kind of deals you can get on a Yaris.
  • I was looking for a pre-reg recently but was struggling to find the right car with the spec that I wanted, within 150 miles of where I live. I ended up getting quotes from Carwow and using them to negotiate the price on a new car at the local dealers. I've ended up paying £200-300 less for new than pre-regs available elsewhere in the country
