Don't worry, folks, he doesn't want to teach and, anyway, no Head in their right mind would give him a job. He won't be teachng anytime soon. He may not even pass his PGCE.0

I'm well past KS2 - still speaking but will hurry out to purchase speech synthesiser....:rotfl:
You were probably taught by the antiquated methods I was. It's so good to know that things have improved, and children are no longer required to learn anything important. I found it a terrible trial throughout school, and the traumatic methods of teaching I experienced are probably to blame for my being the first person in my family to ever go to university. But then, that was in the days when getting a degree meant something too.0 -
Op You can't afford to not work, you have money saved to either get a couple of rooms habitable before the baby comes or use it to pay rent on another property. You surely can't expect tax payers to pay for your choice of giving up work and use benefits to fund your house renovations?
Your wife also doesn't have the luxury of not going back to work asap in your situation, maybe the other option is to sell up and move into a house that doesn't need so much work doing to it.0 -
The Op will only respond to posts which are about his teaching ability, or lack of it!, or those in regards to his last 2 years earnings.
Any post which helpfully suggest that he puts doing his house up on hold, getting a job, his wife going back to work or getting the necessities done are ignored.
What amazes me is that someone supposedly educated to a standard to which we are entrusting our children's education can get himself, his wife and soon to be child into such a predicament.
The sensible thing would be to cut losses and use the £6000 to find a habitable home to rent in which to bring up a baby. I somehow doubt this will happen though.
Im half wondering if the thread is a 'wind-up' as I cant imagine anyone really being this irresponsible.0 -
Being unable to spell could cause real problems for a teacher.
Children can be cruel and will readily jump on any shortcoming (and I saw this over 30 years ago, when children were easier to teach, but really taunted a colleague).
Parents can be intolerant, too: I had a colleague , who taught geography, really criticised by a parent, when he used 'effect' instead of 'affect' in a school report and this was just a single mistake.
It's years since I went on maternity leave (my younger son being in his thirties),but I and many colleagues worked up to a few weeks before giving birth (even one expecting twins), as teaching is not usually a physical job.0 -

Gosh, somebody else who had to learn about the use of the apostrophe and the possessive case - something else that the OP seems to think is obsolete.:)0 -

I did write a 2 page letter of objection for a neighbourhood issue and my next door neighbour asked to see as she was composing hers. She said she was very impressed with my writing skills (I used spell check etc.). As she was an ex head of English Language I was very pleased she approved. Little things eh!~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Educated in the late 60s/70s I wasn't taught grammar and DD was teaching me when she was in Primary School.

you must have attended a very poor school.
i too was educated during the 60's and 70's, and grammar and spelling were drummed into us.
it was in the early 90's that the need to write correctly became unfashionable in teaching.
' what the children write is more important than writing it correctly',
i have a 32 year old daughter who gained 10 GCSE's ( all good grades) and 4 A levels ( again good grades) whilst being unable to spell any word longer than 5 letters.
she isn't dyslexic ... just was never corrected.
her year was the first year ti sit 'SAT's, and the same year that saw the introduction of AS levels.
early in 2000 i was watching a political programme that said my daughters academic year had been done a great mis service by the education authorities, with their continuous meddling0 -

We did spend a lot of time learning how to properly form joined up writing letters which they no longer seem to teach. We were not allowed a Biro until we had perfected joined up writing.:D:D~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Oh thats back. Different schools do different things though, there is a lot more autonomy in school policy now, rightly or wrongly. My school currently teaches cursive in Reception (4/5 yr olds) and its a nightmare as they weren't taught it in Nursery, so now all the letters look completely different to them (the kicks and flicks but not actually joining them yet) and they don't recognise them anymore (plus a lot of our resources are not pre cursive!)
However I went on a visit today at a school that didn't introduce it until Y3.0
