I'm not naturally very tidy, but my OH keeps me in check! (and I appreciate it as I do like living in a tidy home). We have a cleaner every two weeks, so just do top-up cleaning, mainly the kitchen after some messy cooking and the toilets if necessary.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
  • I've thought more about this as I've washed up after dinner.

I feel that I should have added that I have the huge luxury of being a SAHM and therefore have no excuse for the house to be unclean and untidy.

Related to this, you're really busy with 2/3 jobs and run a house with children. I think you might be a single parent (since you don't mention a partner) so really I think you deserve a pat on the back for doing all that you do. Don't sweat the small stuff. Whilst it's not great to bring kids up in a hovel, it's more important for you to build memories with them and not get so stressed and exhausted that you do nothing but shout and nag in the precious time you have with them.

When my teenagers were younger, we did '10 minute tidy ups' most days, to music. It's amazing how much you can get done. Also, limiting possessions is the best starting point for a tidy house. And a tidy house is the best starting point for a clean one!

Little and often is a great place to start. I get really overwhelmed easily, so an organised home helps reduce my anxiety. But small steps is the way to deal with this if you feel it's all too much. Just do the bathroom for instance. And the kitchen the next day etc etc.

I think we all do a great job getting through each day. You probably deserve a medal, don't beat yourself up too much about this.

Only do what's noticeable - and only when somebody is coming round where you'd not want them to see that :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'm average, our house is averagely tidy, my daughter is a disgrace. She is the ultimate in messy
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door
  • I'm not particularly tidy and I have a lot of clutter. I do get rid of the clutter as often as I can but more clutter seems to appear a few days later. Not sure where it all comes from as it's just me living here.

When I get home from work, I tend to be too knackered to tidy and too busy doing my dinner. My weekends are usually spent out and about and spending time with friends, but I try and put some time aside at some point during the weekend to do some tidying and cleaning.

Kitchen and bathroom are usually ok as I tend to wipe/clean those as I go along - it's just the rest of the house!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only untidy person here ! :j

I'm a naturally tidy person too and clutter and mess really pushes my anxiety buttons. My eldest daughter lives in what I can only describe as squalor and I find it very difficult to visit her, after a while I just have to get out of there, usually by suggesting we go out for lunch!

I loathe cleaning and housework though but I live by the motto 'if you don't make a mess, there's nothing to clean up'. I keep areas like the kitchen and bathroom clean on a regular basis but I don't knock myself out for anything else!

I spend more time on the floors than anything else because of dog hairs at the expense of things like windows and cobwebs etc.

I'm feeling smuggly clean at the moment because I had somebody in yesterday to spring clean. Not very MSE but £110 well spent!

Yes, windows are my 'rarely get round to doing'. They've been on my mental radar all week; yet to be done!
