looking at the £19.99 pm EE phone (my first smartphone !)

http://shop.ee.co.uk/mobile-phones/pay-monthly/samsung-galaxy-j5/details#choosePlanAnchor

Will check email, FB, and obviously look on internet. I saw a phone used as a Sat Nav recently (that would come in handy), but when I get used to a modern phone, will I find that 1GB is not enough ? (Updates take up a lot of useage/data, don't they ). Could I upgrade after buying, to 2 GB ?

Confused - help pl

Updates can be set to over wifi only.
IMHO, with correct settings 1GB is enough if you don't download/stream music and videos and keep an eye on your usage.

As long as you install a data counter 1 gig should be enough.

I've only had 500mg for the last few years. I also just check emails, do a bit of browsing and use Google maps for sat nav and I haven't gone over half my allowance yet.

That deal will cost you at least £479 over term of the contract.

If you buy a sim fee smartphone you could get a sim only that offers more for less. Via Uswitch Life Mobile (runs on EE) has an offer for 1500 mins, unlimited text and 1GB for £6 per month or IDMobile (run on Three) offers 500 mins, 5000 texts and 2GB for £9 pm.

The phone you mention is around £140 (other good models are cheaper) unlocked to any network. So buying this upfront if you can and taking a sim only option mentioned above would work out at 284 over 24 months saving you £195 andyou have the freedom to move or change without being locked into a 24 months contract.

thanks folks. this is a bit of a minefield (to me at least).

So, I go to (any shop) and get this(or any other phone I fancy) for £140, and order this sim
    http://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/networks/life-mobile/sim_only_deals/
stick it in the phone (keep my existing number) and hey ho.... yes ?
I have a Nokia 111 (old style thing). Is there a way to get all the numbers transferred across, or, best to write down and do it manually.
For ease of use (age 64/not really technically minded), the phone I mentioned is ? OK, or is something else easier/cheaper/better. First two of these would be priorities rather than better/more technical.
Is a modern Nokia, 'similar' (layout etc) to the older one I have ?

Again, re usage, I wont be streaming music (streaming is 'storing' yes, not just playing.
I would no doubt watch TV will out. Again, that is not using data , is it ?
Is the phone unlocked when I buy it, or do I pay for this at the shop ?
A silly Q probably, but when I order SIM, do I just tell them my existing number that I want on the sim ?

You can save all numbers to the SIM, then import them to the new phone.

Also, that Nokia seems to have a SD memory card. I guess the contacts can be exported/imported via it too. Check the manual.

Plenty of cheaper phones. For 'ease of use' it's worth going to a shop and trying different screen sizes and operating systems: Android or Windows.

Don't buy anything in a shop: they see you coming.

There are similar Nokias, but not Nokia smartphones.
I would no doubt watch TV will out. Again, that is not using data , is it ?
You can't watch terrestrial TV. Watching online one is streaming and does use a lot of data.

This depends on where you buy it.

No, you get a PAC from the old network and pass it to the new network.

    thanks Grumbler
so if I am on EE now, there is no need for PAC numbers ? I just keep old/same number. ?
Will look for a cheaper phone in a shop and then at Argos (assume cheaper there)
Android or Windows ? - another option/problem then.... which ?
( I have a Samsung smart TV, is that a consideration, ie to buy a Samsung phone rather than onother make )

There is, unless you want to stay with EE.

    For the cheapest check HUKD.
    E.g.
Vodafone Smart speed 6 £35.00 @ Tesco Direct
Android or Windows ? - another option/problem then.... which ?
    How do I know?
I can guess that Windows will be a little more 'easy' for "age 64/not really technically minded".

    Microsoft Lumia 640. £79.99 @ O2

Basically that's it. Personally I would always buy online beacuse it offers more consumer protection i.e. covered by disatnce selling regulations for most items. Same goes for sim only contracts buy online for same reason not in store.

To keep your number you will need to request a PAC code from your existing provider (EE ?) and give this to your new provider who can than perfrom the transfer.

I am with EE. If I stay with EE (why not ? more coverage ?) I dont need a PAC No.

Now looking for a 6" screen
