Playhour and bimbo when I was really little and maybe a couple of twinkle comics. Playhour had tiger tim and his chums on the back page .
Bimbo had a boy and girl dolls to cut out and dress and I think had paddy paws and master on the back which was a wire haired fox terrier and his little boy master. Twinkle had num num and his family which was about a kitten with manners lol and all his siblings without. 'Drag a chair','never wash his hands' etc..Then beano and dandy and Beezer .
My bro had victor(with war stories) and shoot (with billy's boots and I think roy of the rovers) .

My gran used to buy my brother and I a comic every week - I got Twinkle, and my brother got the Beano or Look-in. I also used to love the comic 'books' that you could buy, I remember how much I used to enjoy going to WHSmith and picking a new one. One I particularly remember was a story about a girl who found a picture of an old Victorian street-scene in her grandparent's attic, and ended up having (rather grim) dreams about each of the people in the picture.

I used to love The Funday Times. It was a comic inside the Sunday Times newspaper. We didn't get it every week, so when people over heard me as a 7 year old asking for the Sunday Times they thought I was some kind of kid genius. Little did they know I only wanted the comic, not the whole paper.

Twinkle, Little Star, Bunty, Mandy, Jinty, Misty, Beano, Dandy, Beezer, Shoot, Roy of the Rovers, Commando, Action, 2000 AD, Jackie, Look and Learn...

I read 'my' comics, my brother's comics, my cousins' comics.

If it had words in it, and no one else was reading it at that moment in time, I read it!

Beano, Dandy, Beezer, Jackie .... and Superman and Superboy when we went on holiday to my grandparents' house. I don't know why I didn't read them the rest of the time! After reading them I cut out the pictures and made my own stories.
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

I read everything, too. Girl was the best, with Wendy and Jinx on the front page and a picture story of some worthy woman, like Elizabeth Fry, on the back.

I loved my cousin's Eagle, especially Dan Dare. Not allowed Jackie!

Bunny was ok, but does anyone remember how bad the drawings were? The Four Marys looked different in various frames.

  • Eagle for me.
You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.
  • The Four Mary strip in Bunty was terribly dated, even when I was reading it in the 80s.

I have an extremely vivid memory of a story that I think may have been an annual, possibly Judy or Mandy, probably in the late 80s. It was set in a frightening post-apocalyptic world where the human race was under control of aliens; gangs roamed the streets searching for rare tins of food and a precious handful of seeds was hidden for safety in a child's doll. The heroine (called Anella I think) was trying to find her father, who was the leader of freedom fighters rebelling against the invasion. It was really striking, very different to the usual jolly hockey sticks girls comic stuff. Does this ring any bells with anyone else?
