Are santander a crappy bank?

  • Nope. One of the better banks these days. I'm a Select customer although wouldn't know the difference tbh as their main customer service is fine. I find the online banking smooth and I'm used to their security such as text codes which is no problem with me. I would recommend them. They never seem to do switch incentives, guess they leave it to the cashback and 3% interest on credit balances on up to £20k to do the talking!

Rather bizarrely, people often seem to think more highly of an institution that resolves problems quickly than one that doesn't allow those problems to occur in the first place.

Problems are caused by crappy people not doing their jobs properly. Unfortunately a growing trend. As not the professionalism there once was.

There'll always be mishaps. I'd prefer a sound long term relationship where matters get resolved promptly. Than continually spending my time seeking advice from a guy down the pub or internet forums.

One initial hiccup when opened a 123 account with Santander and moved our D/Ds ourselves. The council tax D/D was stopped twice and neither side owned up.

At least their call centres are UK based.

    Perjorative title much?

From my perspective, in terms of overall service offering and level of customer service, they are WAY ahead of the pack. I suppose it just goes to show how hard it is to shed an old reputation...

Most of my calls to First Direct have taken close to 5 mins to answer. Far far worse with HSBC, M&S, Nationwide etc. Never more than 30 seconds with the Santander Select team. And I call them quite a bit! They have consistently been the best of an admittedly bad bunch in terms of cash ISAs. And the 123 account/card construct has been extremely profitable for me. The offset mortgage ticking over at 1% is just the icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.
  • Santander suck.... They can't cope with any enquiries that aren't basic. I have lost count of the hours I have wasted on the phone trying to resolve more complicated issues. I hate them, unfortunately we are stuck with them because my husband works for them.

What enquiries might one have that cannot be answered by reading their website?
Why do you have 'complicated issues'? Are they due to 'user error' - or is it your husband's fault? ;)
    :D:D

For the OP - I'm another that has been with them some years and has never had any problem or issue.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Ive had problems with them which resulted in a complaint to FOS. But in general better or worse than any other bank
  • Been with them since they started the 123 account with the 3% rate. Seem okay, don't have much to do with them really it's a glorified savings account.

First Direct are the best as far as customer service is concerned.
