private plate

Looking at a car with a private plate. I don't want the private plate included. 2 questions

1) private plate is on log book - will I or the seller have to amend this if I buy and how long does it take and is there a cost involve? Can I buy if it's not amended and use the old plate?

2) car is a 56 plate but the private plate includes 55. Is this unusual?

the seller should take the plate off and place it on his new car or on retention BEFORE selling the car

if you buy the car with the plate on , you keep it!

  • Seller has contacted me to say he bought it with the private plate and doesn't have the old plate and that I'd have to contact dvla to reassign To original plate. How long does this take and is there a cost?
  • His new car will supposedly be company car so unlikely.

I'm just trying to figure out if the 55 and 56 are a discrepancy and how I find out old reg. ...hopefully there's paperwork with it on..hoping to view today and buy

in most cases the DVLA retain the old number , when the "fancy" plate is taken off , the DVLA will issue the original one OR a VRN of similar age

when the DVLA had offices , this could take a matter of 3-5 days.

if the original owner wishes to keep the plate , he should contact the DVLA and arrange for it to go on retention , at which point a letter is sent from DVLA giving you authorisation to get new plates made

  • It's just a reg plate, buy the car and leave it as it is. Are you hoping for a discount if the seller removes it?
To get it put to the original number, you might have to put the plate that's on it on retention, think it's £80. Then they'll tell you the "new" (probably original) number, and say you should now use it.
    All done online.

He said it's 56 on the description

No because he's already discounting already as wants rid.

The private plate ends with 3 letters of a female name of which I'm. Not and shows the car being 55 which is older than 56.

If the seller wants to keep the plate they will have to do the transfer and pay the fee.
If you buy the car with the plate on then that is the reg it has. If you want to transfer it back to the original plate you will have to pay.
If you want to check the date of original registration go here Vehicle enquiry
A private reg can have any date related plate provided it is not newer than the vehicle.
  • If he doesn't want the plate, buy the car as it is.

When you get the V5 in your name, go online and pay £80 to put the private registration on a retention certificate. This will cost £80 and you will have the private reg on retention for 10 years. The DVLA will reassign the original plate to the car and will issue a new V5 with original reg on.
