Who do I contact re having access to fibre optic broadband?

Hi

I have just moved into a new build development and have taken my sky broadband with me.

At present I can only have the non fibre optic package from sky as fibre optic isn't available at present. From looking on the BT Openreach website it states that our cabinet is enabled for fibre optic but we aren't able to order it just yet.

Is there a way of speeding up the process and having fibre optic available sooner? If so, who do I contact to ask if they can make it available? Is it Sky? Openreach? The house builder?

Thanks

The answer to the first question is no, Openreach do not communicate with the general public and cannot be contacted by a customer, all you can do is keep checking.

To enquire about fibre you need to contact your broadband supplier which in your case is SKY.

You can't speed it up. The cabinet will be available to all that are connected to it once they have finished all the back end work. They are not in a position to enable it for a specific user.

Get yourself registered for updates for that particular cabinet, that is all you can do

Thanks. I registered for updates a couple of days ago.

At the moment, all of the houses in our part of the development aren't finished or occupied. Is it likely that they would complete all of the properties that will be connected from our cabinet and then make fibre optic available?

Really anyone's guess, people have stated they have cabinets enabled but it has been months before they actually got fibre.

There are also cases where the planned connection is not completed and is postponed until an undisclosed date.

Our town has been given a date, connection at the exchange made, but then the connection to specific areas cancelled with no date. Then a 2015 date was given, altered to January this year and now September this year.... possibly.

So no guarantees, even if you can see a box from your house, as that may not be the one you will be connected to.

...presumably, BT make a commercial decision on when it's worthwhile them enabling a cabinet for fibre.....they carried out all the groundworks in my village but didn't offer fibre until ~ 6 months later.

Where would be the sense in paying for all the works to a cabinet then not enabling it to allow a stream of income?

Most of the time delays are due to blocked ducts, road closure issues or delays in getting the power connection due to ether delays in the local electricity board or due to the costings of additional electrical network infrastructure such as transformers etc.

I'd agree with your premise - if it wasn't for the fact that there are ~5 cabs in our "village" -they were all installed at roughly the same time & powered up - but no-one in the village could get fibre for months -then all the flyers went out at virtually the same time and stickers appeared on the cabs. This was part of the BDUK rollout so just assumed that a commercial cashflow evaluation had been carried out by someone, somewhere !!:)

Possibly, or there could have been exchange upgrade work that was outstanding to deal with the extra capacity that 5 new fibre cabinets would require.

Most of the time, delays are due to issues, rather than commercial decisions - not to say it doesn't happy on occasion ;)
  • A broadband avaialability check on my line says 'fibre broadband is not available in your area'. Having looked at an availability map, it is clear that every property in my street except mine is covered.

My provider (TalkTalk) says it's Openreach's problem. I can't contact Openreach, so who will have made the decision to omit my property and how do I contact them to see if this is an error? Is Ofcom my first port of call?

(I have registered my interest. There are no current plans to provide fibre broadband in my (apparently one property) area).

    Thanks.
