What matters is whether you are happy where you are, not what someone else thinks. I don't need someone writing an article to tell me if my area is right for me, I know it is, that's why I bought here.

As chucknorris says you have to be happy there. Life's not a spectator sport. If you think of your house as an investment whose value you'll enjoy watching grow, you've made a major category error about the components of your life.

    Get over yourself people.

You rent because you want to live somewhere. You buy because you want to live somewhere and invest in a property.

No financial considerations about the biggest investment you will ever make is just stupid.

If you bought in the right London location over the last five years you now could move outside London and be mortgage free.

It's wise to some have strategy in your early days and accept a little trade off for a better life later.

We are going to take a look at the Isle of Man this summer, but it has to be somewhere where we would be happy, we are not willing to compromise our happiness (but we are of course already at 'later'). That said though, we are beginning to believe that it might be a great place to live (in the non winter months).

In my local suburban shopping centre there are four coffee shops and no chicken shops whatsover. Is this good or bad?

Haven't quite followed this IoM notion but you initially mentioned it due to tax implications. From that you're checking that it is somewhere you would like to live? What makes it better than beautiful Surrey? You have access to one of the best cities in the world, beautiful countryside, river walks, etc etc. What is the attraction of IoM over the tax benefits?

I don't particularly like London, so proximity to London is no advantage to me. The tax benefits are secondary, but they would become important if we like the IOM. It looks like (this needs verifying, starting this summer with a holiday there) the IOM has even more to offer than Surrey does from a hiking, jogging, walking, cycling perspective. Chess in Surrey would probably be better (more competition) but bowls in the IOM would probably be better, as international (rather than county) games become a possibility.

Some of the perceived disadvantages of the IOM I actually see as advantages, in that it is very rural and underdeveloped. But one step at a time, we haven't even been there yet. This shows some of the landscape there:

I can't see that happening, but I am always open to look at new things, and I would have a look, but I have never had an interest at all in motor bikes (same applies to saling, which was something one of my friends suggested). If something new was to appeal to me, it might well be kayaking in the sea (around the coastline).
