Strangers money appears in my account

Still no further forward.
You say twice that you have sent "them" an e-mail - is "them" DWP or your bank (or both) ?
I'm with Darksparkle in that you should be contacting your bank and asking that they return the payment to whoever sent it....
your bank can legitimately act on your instructions, but DWP can't just go in and grab the money back0 -
Have you tried phoning DWP?0

The DWP move very slowly... Possibly why you have not had a response.0

Some (many) years ago I had a deposit of a few hundred pounds that clearly was not for me. I called into the bank, saw the Manager and he sorted it out, eventually let me know that the money had now gone to the person it was meant for. No idea if that is possible any more as things change but that is all I had to do."Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety". - Benjamin Franklin0 -

I wouldn't bother chasing it too much, I had a much larger payment appear in my account, I reported it immediately to my bank they said they would be in touch and shifted the sum to a spare savings account, 18 months later the bank got in touch and re-claimed the money
I had a great weekend in Whitby with Mrs V on the interest.0 -

The thing is that so far Bryando is being quite coy as to whether or not he actually has reported it to his bank.
He's said that he's sent "them" an e-mail, but this could refer to DWP or the bank - it's not clear which. He also said he was going to phone "them" last Monday but again it's not clear who "them" is and if he actually did it - and if so what they said.
He's also has said that he's going to be making his MP aware, but again it's not clear if this has actually been done.0 -
When my OH and I ran our own business a sum of £5000 appeared in our bank account. We immediately contacted our bank business manager but he said there was nothing they could do:eek:, couldn't take the money back and couldn't trace the person who had put it there
We put it into a high interest account and it was eventually claimed0 -
Letter arrived today from the DWP explaining why the money landed in my account and thanking me for my honesty. Letter arrived on the back of me contacting my MP.
They have enclosed an envelope to post a cheque or Postal Order if I want. So all sorted. Weird to be thanked for honesty right enough!0 -

I'll bet you contacting your MP chivvied the DWP along a bit.
Your MP must have been appalled if it turns out to be DWP's mistake. If it was a payment for e.g. government stationery meant to go to random private company XYZ and deposited to you in error, then hey, mistakes happen. But someone's benefit?! Is it not possible, in these days of electronic banking, for the DWP to have checks and balances to make sure that the name on their side of the electronic transaction matches the name of the account the money is being paid into?0
