Strangers money appears in my account

Government wont wipe it off, they'll demand it be returned.
Generally not the case. If a claimant has provided wrong bank details, but the account provided is a genuine number, payment will not be re-issued until the original payment is returned. It is the claimant's responsibility to arrange that, not the DWP, as payment was issued in accordance with the claimant's request.
If the money has been paid to a wrong account in error by DWP they will attempt to get it back but have the problem of tracing the account holder etc and then recovering the amount. For small erroneous payments it is often not cost effective to do that.0 -

They shouldn't have much trouble in this particular case though...Bryando will be 'returning' it and with the NINO the DWP will be able to trace it back to the correct claimant0 -

That won't work. There are no systems in place to deal with honest claimants wanting to return things they aren't entitled to. :rotfl:0 -

It doesnt matter - as long as he notifies the DWP ( and bank ) in writing, by recorded delivery of the erroneous amount then he wont be guilty of retaining a credit illegally.Stuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

My response was intended as a slightly tongue-in-cheek joke, therefore the reason for the rolling smilie. Clearly lost on some!0

Why should the OP pay for two lots of Signed For (not Recorded Delivery) items? He would be out of pocket.
I would just let my bank know and wait. A simple note to the branch or an on-line banking message if his bank has such a facility.0 -
I have sent them a email and will be making my MP aware . As should they come back in a year or so I can at least show I made attempts to surrender the money.0

What did DWP say when you called them, They would have been able to take your bank account details and pass it to the back office for them to investigate.
But in cases like this DWP write the debt off. You haven't been overpaid, DWP can't actually just access your account and remove funds, Or they would be doing it to everyone who owes them money.0
