DVD burners

Another question, how is your mum planning on playing these avi files ? On a DVD player or PC ?0

Internally, £20 or so is sufficient. I tend to go for Samsung or LG as I had no problems with either. Both are keenly priced and with the latest technology.
External, up to £40.
Incidentally, you don't need to have a DVD burner. A CD burner will suffice. Do you have one?
This may sound silly but I don't know.Could it have come with the PC? If so I may have one. I definitely haven't bought one.

a laptop, they don't usually work in a DVD player. Well so my friend said.0 -
I've had no trouble playing video files burned to DVD on my PC on my cheap DVD player but have had on a more expensive one. Some will play files without you having to convert them to DVD format as well.
If you have got a CD or DVD burner i would go for a DVD burner as it will burn CDs as well and they are not expensive nowadays.
https://www.scna.co.uk have internal Optiarch DVD burners from £15.57 in their "Today Only" section. Optiarch are a joint venture between Sony and NEC, although I've never used one of these drives I would expect them to be decent. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

Unless it's a very old PC, it's very likely to have a CD or DVD burner.
So, it's likely what you need is some sort of DVD burning software. ie. Nero.
Can you press the Windows and the Pause/Break button on your keyboard and tell us what you see?
It will give us some idea as to the capabilities of your machine.
You can use Nero to convert your .avi files to a format playable by most stand-alone DVD players. You can do this even if you have a CD burner.
Trial version here; http://www.nero.com/nero7/ena/nero7-demo.php
Don't download and install just yet. Let's find out a little more about your machine.0 -
Apologies if I break the thread
:rotfl: you edited your name but left the license number on show for everyone to copy. Let's hope everyone that sees this thread is upstanding an honest.
Edit: fwiw, after PM'ing you I reported the post to the admin to safeguard your license key, which is the reason why the message above looks disjointed. It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -

It's almost certain that you have some kind of burner on your machine. At least a CD burner.
You can just click on Hardware and check under Disk Drives or CD drives to discover the brand name and designation number of your Optical Drive.
Alternatively, you can 'right click' on the drive letter corresponding to your optical drive and then to select 'Properties'.
You don't have to worry about revealing anything, but you can now edit your earlier post, by taking out the screenshot.
It's quite likely that you can work with what you have now.
Later we'll talk about how to add a little more RAM to your system.0 -

Thanks so much for letting me know! Having googled licence key I now know that it is important and secret, thanks for the heads up! Should I panic that I shared it with the world?0 -

OK....I get the following under DVD/CD rom drives....
CD Rom drive
H+H DVD Rom DVD-41SD SCS1 Cd rom device (it says that twice)
HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE 8483B
HL-DT-St DVD rom GDR 8162 B
I have absolutely no idea what any of that means.Alternatively, you can 'right click' on the drive letter corresponding to your optical drive and then to select 'Properties'.
I understand you up to "right click" and after "and then" but the bit in the middle is confusing.Later we'll talk about how to add a little more RAM to your system.

It's a bit confusing, but it looks as if you have a CD Writer.
So, in the absence of any burning software on your computer, you can now download and install the Nero 7 fifteen day Demo from the link above.
Towards the end of the installation, you will get the option to choose which actions will be automatically dealt with by a Nero program. You can de-select all options before going ahead.
If you choose to do a Custom Install, you might want to disable Nero Scout and Home, but choose to include InCD 5.
If it's all too complicated, just let it install with the default settings. You can always un-install it later if it doesn't suit.
Hopefully, if your Packard Bell doesn't 'pack up', you will soon be able to turn your .avi films into VCDs and SVCDs. Playable on most standalone DVD players and PCs/Laptops.0
