  • LW I'd say go for it if he could, as others have said you never know what's around the corner, treasure each moment whilst you can.

    Evening all,

    Chilled day, doing domestics :)

Mr LW and JO - glad your okay - hope you're not too shaken X

LW - Any chance Mr LW could go PT - I did this 18 months ago and work 3 days a week now - it's a halfway house till I work up to the leave work plan :)

GERS - I went for the Dy$on 'fluffy' before Christmas, for the same reason, my much loved Miele cat and dog was a PITA on the stairs - the house is much tidier as a result, as it's SO easy to use :)

Chilli and Nachoes for dinner - wine gums for pudding LOL
Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

  • I retired in 1995 and wouldn't go back (too old now anyway :)) I have far too much fun to want to be a wage slave again Life is for living and enjoying It can turn around in an instant, as I know only too well. When we retired we had a list of things we wanted to do and my OH had only 8 years bless him of retirement. The times we said 'right next year we will do this or that' and we never did .

Carpe Diem definitely if you can afford it then go for it I have never regretted retiring I am far too busy to go to work now anyway :):):)

My new machine is DC58 and the other is the same as yours, the red 2000w one that is no longer available. I too love it but sometimes it's too difficult. We lived in a flat in Newcastle so cleaning stairs is new to me!

    No more buying. Promise.

Lainey doing something PT based at home would be ideal; he used to be a contractor, so I'm thinking maybe some of the agencies he's used in the past might be able to point him in the direction of some work.
He's an IT professional - something called a DBA (that's DataBase Administrator, not Does Bu88er All as some of his friends would have it :rotfl:) so there might be something out there for him.

Islandmaid I think he really would like to get out of where he is now - they're really starting to put on him a lot, expecting miracles - they've had staff members leave, and instead of replacing, the rest have to pick up the slack and still work to the same standard, and it's getting beyond funny. As I said, I can't remember the last time he left work on time. It's supposed to be 17:30 finish, but invariably it's 17:50, 18:00, or even later. Now and again one doesn't mind, but it's every flippin' day and he's coming home exhausted. If he went PT there, I think the same thing would happen as happened to me when I went PT - I was expected to do 37 hours work in 25 hours.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

More and more companies, well at least the decent ones, are recognising the benefits of more flexible working and offering pt roles. Have to say my new company seem really quite good in that respect, I am one of five or six in the office who have pt hours and not just working Mums.
Fingers crossed that he can get the better life balance he is due, certainly sounds like they are taking the mick with extra hours every day.

Tell him to run for the hills :) or to a quiet corner of your home, set up an IT helpline (have you tried turning off and on again ;) ) - I,m sure you will both come to the 'right' decision for you both X

LW - I would gently encourage him to retire, sounds like he's worked out for himself that he's had enough, the travel time alone must take its toll.

The weather today has been mixed, lovely sunshine, hail, sleet and rain and really very cold. I've been in the shower and have my pjs on, the fire is lit and I'm going to catch up on some tv.
  • LAMEWOLF Two examples for my vote of retiring now -

    1. I couldn't wait to hit 60 and retire. My friend and work colleague wanted to postpone retirement and carry on working as she was frightened of being bored. At 63 she was diagnosed with stomach cancer and died months later. She didn't experience any retirement due to delaying it.

    2. Mr TA took retirement at 60 even though he would only be receiving his works pension. And we are so glad he did because when he reached 65 he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer and life has revolved around treatment and appointments in the 3 years since then. Prior to the diagnosis we had five wonderful years of retirement, enjoying many holidays and lots of visits to our caravan. Five wonderful years which we wouldn't have had if he had chosen to carry on working until 65.

You don't know what's waiting to happen and should enjoy life while you can. Hope he comes to the right decision xx

  • LW After losing two lovely people aged 52 and 45 this year, and my died died aged 66, I would say gently push him towards retirement, maybe he could ask the college if they need a tutor to train young people in database admin, or do part time consultancy work. None of us know what is around the corner and life is too short to be unhappy at work.
Friend's funeral was on Tuesday and like SIL's the week before it was a good send off and the chapel was packed.
I will be glad to see the back of February :(

I wanted to start some spring cleaning this week , but my damn arthritis is not letting me, can't even knit at the moment and my sight problems are not helping either, so DH has said that he will get the sproglets to do some of it at the weekend.

DD has just got in from work so I am off for a cuppa and a chat with her, then an early night with some painkillers.

    BFN x
