I went to weigh in with dd last night and lost 3 pounds so very pleased. When asked what she planned next week DD said "eat my mum's home made freezer diet meals" much to the group's and my surprise ;)

Younger dd is coming to stay for a few days on Saturday evening and will suggest she packs up some of her things before the move next Friday - fingers crossed.

Plan to do some batch cooking this afternoon and nip out to look for YS bargains.

    Hugs to all

  • Afternoon (((((((((((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))) if you need one.

At U3A this morning, very interesting talk about how some of the Big Name products got their names.

Its fine but cold in the shade, just a gentle breeze, hope it dried my laundry, put it out before we went out, also laid the fire, the sun has warmed the sitting room, so will wait to light the fire till a bit later.
  • Afternoon all,

LW - I did the same thing to the car I was driving, only it was the sun blinding me rather than lights. I was out on the test drive at the time... haven't been back to that garage since.

I don't know where the half term has gone. I have got quite a few bits done though so can't really complain. It's a lovely sunny day today which makes me think that Spring is just around the corner :)

Have a good day all :)

JackieO I'm glad you too are unscathed; if there's one thing I hate it's people who drive too close then can't stop in time when something happens.

Mr LW has started talking about retiring; originally, he was planning to work til he was 70, but I think he's really had enough now; and his work are taking advantage of his good nature. I can't remember the last time he left the office on time, and he's always set up and ready to start work before 09:00, when the others are still mithering about setting up their laptops or having their breakfast!

I've told him I'll support whatever decision he makes, but I can't decide for him - but to be perfectly honest, I hope he does decide to retire. I can see the 60 mile round trip and the stressful work taking it's toll.

I'm sure we'll manage financially; he already gets a small pension from where he used to work; and I have my Civil Service pension. We're mortgage-free; and of course there wouldn't be the travel costs he has now. Maybe he could even get in touch with the agencies he used when he was a contractor, with a view to getting a spot of work locally.

I'd appreciate some unbiased thoughts - should I "encourage" him to retire, stay out of it completely and mind my own business, or what?
Or am I missing something I should be factoring in?

ETA: Mr LW was 66 last December.

Lamewolf you can only really remind him of the positives and the negatives of retiring now. As you said, it's got to be his choice.

LW - my personal opinion is to gently encourage him along the path to spending more time at home / locally. If he weighs up the pros and cons then perhaps it'll help sway him.

My only sibling dropped down dead aged 56 years and it's influenced my thinking ever since. I 'retired' at the earliest opportunity last March and haven't regretted a single day, even though I don't get my SP yet. Things are tighter financially although I'm fortunate enough to draw a final salary pension and have picked up three bits of non-demanding work. (by that I mean no office, no commuting, no colleagues not pulling their weight etc).

My day has been one of pleasure! I risked another drive up to Oban (where there was wet snow lying) and bought a Dy*on handheld vacuum - what a revelation that is. It's fantastic! It's really for the stairs as using the Mie*le is a pain there as the steps are fairly steep and the dumpy machine difficult to hold as the other hand is vacuuming. My non-treat treat. Actually I can't believe how excited I am about it - showing my age now. :rotfl:

Weather has been most odd. Bright sunshine with heavy hailstones, the noise in the supermarket was terrific as the hailstone hit everywhere.

    Time for tea I think.
  • That post posted irself witjout human agrncyHello all, I was sorry to read about peoples'accidents but relieved that nobody was hurt - still a shock even so.

I have had a busy day, had a job to do first thing, similar tomorrow , then to a friend for a cup of tea (two cups, ) then into the city to shop for our manager's birthday gift, then back to paperwork. An expensive day but not all the expense is mine, my oppo will share.

Car is in the garage for mot and service, unfortunately it seems to have a computer inside it which is not communicating with the garage's computer so I think that has slowed things down and it will not be back today, botherat ion.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

LW if you can afford him retiring, I'd say go for it. Then you can spend quality time together :D

Thank you Judi, Gers and candygirl.
Mr LW's dad died of a heart attack aged 59, and his sister succumbed to cancer at 56; so if he's really feeling fed up, maybe it's time he hung up his laptop, so to speak. I'd certainly welcome having him around here more.:o
He sounded so very p***ed off when he rang me this afternoon.:(
I shall of course support him whatever he decides to do; but I can't help feeling that 10 years of a 60 mile round trip every day is enough; and the way they're riding him lately is making it a penance for him to be there. Realistically, I don't think he'd get another similar full-time job at his age - though they're not supposed to be ageist, they most assuredly are; it was hard enough last time, it'll be worse 10 years later - hence he's talking "retire" not "move jobs".

LW just a thought but if Mr LW didn't want the commute etc would it be possible for him to do something more home based? My beloved was made redundant last year from a seriously stressful finance role and now uses his accountancy qualifications to do consultancy work from home. His commute is the few steps upstairs to the study and he can pick and choose hours etc?
