To upgrade to windows 10 or not?

  • A new version of an operating system can certainly bring the luddite out in people. I have been very impressed with Windows 10 - especially the speed. Have had a couple of minor incompatiblity problems, but that has been down to me being too tight to replace some peripherals that are long past their sell by date.

Remember, upgrade doesn't necessarily mean improvement.

Windows 10 is definitely better than 8/8.1, but is not really an improvement over 7.

I've had one or two Windows 10 systems go on a wonk (update procedure got broke and I had to do a bit of searching to find a solution).

The Edge browser is now really just a tool to allow you to install a real browser, and the Control panel has an ugly twin in the Windows Settings (some things are best in one and some in the other).

There have been many threads and comments about the spyware, and sharing your resources for the neighbours updates too.

Also, I don't know about a 1.7 GHz computer; whilst GHz isn't bogomips, it still seems a bit lowly.

I've got a Windows 10 tablet, and it's not too inspiring in all honesty; I bought it to try it out, but apart from running upgrades for an evening or so it's not done a lot and I find it a bit clunky.

I might be inclined to run the Windows 10 upgrade on my Windows 7 machines, just to get them registered, and then reinstall Windows 7 again to improve them back to where they were.

I have a couple of big i3/5 machines here and I have 2 intel nuc things , win 10 on all 4

even runs on the intel nuc n2820 (2830 cpu) , and that is not fast by any chalk , however the best improvement the OP could make would be to buy a SSD drive 120/240g (£30-60) and run with that and keep his old drive in a caddy for storage

however before he progresses he must firstly UPGRADE and register the m/board with m/soft

ok as a point of intrest , the acer has a 1.7g i5 (cut down one) my nuc has an i3

here is the performance figures for the two of them (higher is better)

I would suggest an increase in the memory from the 4g (less with vid card) to 8g , and to spend £40 on amazon on a 120g ssd and a case to put his old 1t drive

as my 13 runs windows fine (alas its 16g) I would think that acer would be ok

my personal "rule of thumb" is 2000 or more = ok below 2000 = work , but struggle at multiple tasks

Wow - does an SSD really weigh 30x as much as some memory?

yup coz it holds 30x more , but I take it that your posting was just being sarcastic

perhaps the correct terminology should be gigabyte

as in 4 or 8 gigabyte of memory and 120 or 240 gigabyte hard drive

There are several low-end SSD laptops running Windows 10 with less than that. This one, for example, is only 1.33 GHz. Not saying they are running it particularly swiftly, just that they have W10 pre-installed and therefore the CPU was selected with that OS in mind.

Also M=mega whilst m=milli (one thousandth of), so people who lazily type 'mb' are really describing a tiny bit of a bit!

I've got a Windows 10 tablet, and it's a bit sluggish when installing updates; I haven't used it for a lot else, as the Windows 10 interface is a bit cumbersome on a touch screen.

But it's a good chance for the closet pedant to come out!
