To upgrade to windows 10 or not?

Options
I have seen a lot of helpful advice re new laptops and one of the was that it was best to upgrade to windows 10 on a new laptop subject to the spec of the laptop.

Is this new one I am buying suitable for the 10 upgrade? If so I will do the upgrade straight away and change the settings to reduce the info which is collected.

I am getting an Acer Aspire E5-571 15.6 Inch Intel i5 1.7GHz Dual Core 4GB 1TB.

Any advice or comments will be appreciated.

I received a full refund for the Toshiba I returned FOC to Argos last week.

Thanks,

I'm working on a Surface Pro i5 with 4gb Ram - so similar, but I'm working from an SSD (yours is HDD) so it's a bit quicker.

The windows 10 upgrade is fine. If you're in the slightest competent with computers you won't have any issue with it or find anything too different from XP, Vista, 7, or even 8. It's not perfect, but there's no point not doing it as your hard drive is massive anyway.

You are going to have to install Windows 10 at some point, so now is probably as good a time as any, since there seems to be no sign of a newer update to Windows 10 on the immediate horizon.

If it currently has Windows 7 (unlikely) or Window 8.1 the 'free upgrade to Windows 10' deadline is 29th July.

  • Can I ask on the back of this query pls..... My cherished laptop (still going strong) works on Vista; seems I can't upgrade to 10 (no ideas why but guessing my workhorse is a tad tired or not enough 'space') - do I NEED to buy another laptop or what are the implications if I still continue to use my existing machine?

Vista went into 'extended support' back in 2012, which ends in 2017. After which security patches etc. will cease.

You may already be finding newly released programs won't install.

Obviously, some peeps still drive around in Morris Minors because they feel modern cars offer nothing they need.

That said, so long as Vista has maximum RAM available, it performs OK.

Stop using that word 'upgrade' when you mean 'change'

the original poster cannot "change" his OS , he must first upgrade it , then get rid of the upgrade 8.1/10 cockup and reinstall a clean win 10

Really? I have absolutely no plans to upgrade any of my Windows 7 machines to Windows 10.

It's up to the user. If the pc's not powerful enough to run Windows 10 comfortably, there's no point 'upgrading' the pc.

No wonder this forum's tailed off so badly.

I have recently restored two vista laptops to factory settings and neither work properly now. IE won't work, some programmes will not open when I have downloaded them. Procesor works most of the time at 100%. I will be scrapping them.

I ordered my new laptop this afternoon and have just been advised that it has been dispatched. I will no doubt be back!
